Here's a blog post I came across that discusses WordPress security vulnerabilities and how to see if you're blog is open to attack and what to do about it...

WordPress Security - Urgent Update for Blog Owners | Free Traffic System

Now, there's some "disagreement" about what to do to safeguard your blog in that post, so I thought I'd let some of our tech-savvy members here tell us what they recommend.

This will benefit anyone here that runs a WordPress blog as there's been a couple in the past that have been hacked. I think we should all be aware of these vulnerabilities and know how to fix it.

There's gotta be someone here that can give us some advice on how to protect a WordPress blog. Do the strategies discussed in that article work? Is there anything else we can do? We're all ears.

The most important thing is to keep WordPress up to date, one of the reasons they update WordPress so often is to fix the vulnerabilities.

The files permission settings are another issue to be aware of. In the past and on some hosting accounts some files or directories needed to be writable in order for WP to operate properly. Usually the wp-content folder or the themes and plugins folder within it needed to be set to 777 on some accounts and that should not be set that way anymore. Check your file and folder permissions and if set to 777 try to change them to 755.

Thanks for the input, Houdy. I think upgrading to the latest version is the best thing we can do, but most people ignore it because it's such a hassle to do.

Once you have upgraded to wp 2.7 any further updates can be done easilly and automatically form the the wp dashboard....any who has a version before 2.7 will just have to do it the hard way....or contact houdy to do it for you...for a small fee of course

Thanks for the input, Graham. I think I actually need to upgrade myself, but having already upgraded to 2.7, it shouldn't be too difficult now.

Hi Craig,

Thank you very much for your input. I have found your information useful, as I'm sure others have as well. I'm going to implement what you suggested. Better safe than sorry.
