For a person who is planning to have around 5-7 sites, what would you recommend for hosting? I can't decide if I would need VPS or Dedicated Servers. Any tips? What control panel do you recommend?

Hey Launder,
Have you tried MediaTemple.net? They've got a custom control panel which is pretty cool - they're the one hosting sites like Adobe, Sony, Starbucks, you name it

A VPS or Dedicated machine will give you more control over your hosting environment, but it all comes down your specific requirements. If you want something cheap and reliable with the ability to host multiple sites then Host Gator is a good option for a shared Linux environment.
Discountasp and Server Intellect are a couple of Windows hosts, shared and vps/dedicated, that I would recommend. |

Get a reseller server at HostGator and host all your sites on with for one monthly price regardless of how many sites you put on the server.

1and1 gives great ability to host multiple sites in one hosting package. And they are affordable. Hostgator does the same thing at a higher cost, but a little easier to set things up.
No need to go dedicated even with 50 or 500 sites. You need to go dedicated if you need root access for special server requirements. I hope this helps. |

I run my own server AND I have a reseller account at hostgator for backup. I recommend for 5-7 sites, just go ahead and get a reseller account at hostgator, good reputation, good service and good deal on price...

How complex would it be to maintain VPS or dedicated hosting for me? I mean I really don't know much on hosting at all. I know the basics but that is about it. I'll have at least a couple blogs and then other than that I am not certain on the sites but I hope to have nice traffic.

If you go with a VPS, choose a "managed" one. The provider/data center will manage everything for you - installations, updates, security, downtimes, software, etc.
With an unmanaged VPS, you'll have to take care of everything yourself, including installing all softwares that you want added to your server as features. I used to have a Reseller account, but have sinced moved on to VPS. A reseller account is on a "shared" server, so that means that if someone (in some other part of the world) abuses the server and gets blacklisted, then all the sites under that shared server (sharing the same IP) are blacklisted as well. You suffer for someone else's abuse. There are other disadvantages as well. Perhaps you should try VPS first before going to Dedicated. Reserve dedicated for more demanding sites (image hosts, videos, social networks, etc) or if you have a lot of sites to host |

I work for a hosting firm, and I have a VPS offer as well as managed services that you could combine with it (and include cpanel).
Offers start at $59 / mo for 80GB Space, and 1GB RAM. PM me, and I can share more info with you. |

I am not aware of HostGator providing VPS. By the way, a VPS account will find you costing more than $20 per month Maybe you mean "Reseller" Hosting? Reseller and VPS are different

A $35 reseller account will suit you.
Recommend: surpasshosting.com and hostgator.com However, a VPS is a much better solution as you can create your won reseller account in there, have the benefits of a VPS as well. Even better it is managed. Recommend wiredtree.com A good VPS will be 50 - 75 bucks. |

A lot of people recommending Host Gator and I have to agree. I thought I had a good host at one point that had served me well enough for years. They were expensive though. So when I saw the prices were much cheaper on Host Gator and with many positive reviews, I decided to give them a chance. The end result was months later I migrated all the sites I work on to Host Gator and haven't looked back. Host Gator are reliable and, on the odd occasion when I have needed support, it has been a virtually instant response via their online help desk. Definitely happy to recommend them.

Yes hostgator is good. And I use baby shared hosting plan. I started about 2 months ago and it has been Ok, but sometime, I feel that the connection to my website fails time to time showing "nework connection failed".
Another good option maybe fastdomain.com. I am using their shared hosting too and their plan includes 1 domain registration. I have explained some detailed comparison between fastdomain and hostgator in my blog below . Check WordPress Setup menu and click on the domain registration and signup for hosting. |

For just five to seven sites, you could use bluehost.com.
They have unlimited domains, unlimited space, and unlimited transfer for about $6.95 per month if you buy it over a certain number of years. Hope that helps! Make it a great day! |

Although, normally, the big hosting companies are not always the way to go. I have had friends suggest 1&1 hosting. They have some deals going on. However, make sure to check it out and do a little research.
