Default Wordpress ecommerce plugin problem

Hi I am trying to add a digital audio product on my wordpress site. I found the ecommerce plugin which I installed. I made a test purchase and went through with the payment through paypal successfully but only problem is that paypal did not redirect to my site for the download after the payment.

Couldn't get much help on the forums of the plugin. Hope to get it here. I went to the documentation site of the plugin and here's what I found.

Product Download

f you are selling a digital product, here is where you upload the associated file. Note: Some web hosts will time out and appear to crash when you try to upload large files. If this happens you can upload files to wp-content/uploads/wpsc/downloadables using your FTP client and then associate them manually. If you are uploading a file via FTP you can get it to work with the shop module. Here we go:
  • Upload the file via FTP and copy the name of the file
  • Then go to {url replaced} and create a hash code out of that filename and note/copy the MD5 code after generating
  • Go to your server’s database and create a new item in wp_product_files (id, filename, mimetype and idhash, date doesn’t matter)
  • In your FTP program choose the file and rename it with the generated MD5 hash code
  • If you have done everything right and refresh the product page in WP e-Commerce you should see the exact filename
  • Now you can choose it and offer it as downloadable file
Now, I can understand everything in that guide, except the step marked in red. What is he saying? Do I need to create a new SQL database on the server? And I cannot find anything called wp_product_files?

Can anyone here help me on this? Thanks very much.

No, the table should have been created when you installed the plugin. Go into your hosting companies control panel and find a link to phpmyadmin. Then, find our database if you have more than one and finally select the table wp_product_files. Click on the pencil icon to edit the table and add your product as instructed. Save and you should be good to go.

Also, do you have IPN turned on in PayPal? If not, you will need to activate that as well. It is under Profile/Instant Payment Notification Preferences. Turn it on and insert your websites URL in the box. It doesn't matter what you put there as the plugin will send its own return URL.

Hey John,

Thanks for your help. that was quick.

I did what you said. I edited the table, turned the IPN on but still Paypal doesn't redirect to my website again for the download.

What am I missing?

Thanks once again for your help.

OK, one other thing to check. Make certain the Auto Return is activated in PayPal. Is is in Profiles/Website Payment Preferences.

PM me the plugin name so I can take a look. If you can't get this one to work, I know of another one that will work and isn't so complicated.

Hi John
I turned the auto return on. But its asking for return url. What should be the return URL in this case? Does it matter if I put the URL of my homepage?

I think the plugin should be sending the return url in any case.

Tip Re: Wordpress ecommerce plugin problem

Your return url should point simply to the download page or the file itself...

yourdomain.com/downloadfolder/product.pdf oryourdomain.com/downloadpage/
