Which reminds me. Silverlight does require .NET on the client as far as I know. Have you seen the new plan for MS and .NET. Compile anything to MSIL (.NET intepreter code). Then write translaters to compile MSIL anything. x36 code, Javascript, Flash, PHP, i64, etc. | |

While there are numerous languages to write in, PHP is the easiest for the basic html guy to adapt to. I program in html, php, cgi, and javascript and although there is a time and place for everything, php is my favorite.

Actionscript 3, the Flash Platform programming language.
You can write software for the web or for the desktop with little or no modification to your code. With the browser plugin installed in more than 98% of browsers is the preferred tool of marketers to deliver interactive, breathtaking experiences online and offline with the AIR runtime. On a personal side I love it because I can have two fingers on programming, one on design, one in new, bleeding cutting edge trends and the other free for coffee, all five fingers happy, entertained and diversified while keeping focus, how's cool is that? Why don't you try it now? |

I love C# and ASP.NET along with Javascript and MS SQL Server 2008 + Windows Server 2008! I do some PHP, but mostly MSFT programming for me! (Now is that a good thing or a bad thing...?)

Regarding PHP frameworks - I really enjoy using CodeIgniter. Just structured enough to enforce good programming habits, but the framework itself is very lightweight and unobtrusive.

Currently I work mostly with Classic ASP/VB Script, Visual Basic 6, VBA (Access programming), and now PHP. I've done a little work with C and C++, but it's been a while. And like others, I haven't had the time to get into .NET.

Started learning .NET the other day and I've got to say I'm pretty impressed. It all seemed a bit overwhelming at first but the videos on asp.net are a huge help. Plus the fact that my brother is a .NET fanatic helps!
I'm learning .NET for two reasons - one being that my team in my "day job" just merged w/ another team whose skills are all .NET so I'm pretty sure I'll be getting to put these new skills to use soon and two being that my brother keeps hounding me to learn it, and I figured it's a good framework to get some solid experience in. I'm pretty much leaning towards C# though, quite easy to pick up since I know Java. Not a big fan of VB... Next step is to figure out why I'm having so much trouble installing SQL Server 2005. I think I'll just uninstall it all and go for SQL Server 2008. Seems it's having trouble with the MSXML part.. frustrating! .. back to uninstalling all these flipping components.. Karen |

I love PHP.
I have been programming since 1982 and I've programmed with just about everything (BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, Assembly, VB, Perl,C, C++, Java, etc. ... even Ada! Anybody else ever programmed in Ada? I see your hand DallasL.) But for sheer simplicity and that instant gratification of seeing something come together in a web browser... I love PHP. I love it so much that I left my senior programming position at NASA working on the Space Shuttle simulator where the astronauts learn to fly their missions so I could do PHP programming on the web for ecommerce. How's that for loving a language? |

Whoa, this thread brings back old memories, although I'm a kiddie compared to some of the veteran programmers here
![]() Back in 9th grade, I programmed in C and C++. They're still my favorite languages. There's something about that Borland Turbo Editor's blue screen that I can't RESIST! Been a while since I did anything in C/C++ though. I've also done some VB6 and VB .Net programming. To me, they spell convenience. To be able to "draw" a button without writing any code - that's kinda cool ![]() C++ is my favorite with PHP/MySQL combo being a close second. Sagar |

Thanks I've got some tips from this thread... I always wanted to learn PHP and now that are guides of type "lean xxx in 21 days" and similar - I guess I'll learn more programming languages at the end. So I'll add C++, ASP.NET, JAVA for now. :-)

.NET environment all the way.
No matter which one you choose performance is arguably (technically should be) the same. Preference for C# though. If you want performance I go down the assembly route. Debugging is definitely the biggest factor though. |

I'd add that PHP has the most money making potential in the widest range of apps.
You can create brand new web app from scratch with it and sell it. Or you can enhance existing product/service/tool - and sell your enhancement. Most of the web backend creativity is build on PHP so knowing it well opens opportunities. Gleb |

You can do that with any other...
What makes PHP so great is that it's free and openly supported (given it's open source too), and it runs well and highly supported on free operating systems too (even in commercial environments). Are you sure? That's a very bold false statement. |

okay seems clears other disagree but I got to tell you, I LOVE RUBY!
Its fun to work with and great for hacking fast scripts. I uses it a lot the way others use perl. I use it for scraping, automation, browser emulation. lots of great gems out there. yes it has its problems, and I was never a fan of rails. Recently I started playing with Sinatra a great framework for rapid prototype stuff. Of course PHP is great and I still used it a lot for sites. Its great having all these tools available

Php has matured quickly, now a oop language, with a robust frameworks like zend and its server, pretty soon .net websites will be looking at php with envy.
Python also seems to be growing and becoming an important alternative. |

For code I write myself, as opposed to hire out or otherwise delegate...
What I love, personally: Python and Django. Disadvantages: Compared to e.g. Wordpress + PHP, not nearly so many plug-n-play scripts and addons. Can be more expensive to hire contractors (way more PHP devs out there... larger labor pool). Advantages: My favorite language ![]() Another advantage: if I need to do something for which no reusable tool already exists, it's quick and easy *for me* to do it in Python + Django. (Because I'm nearly an expert in the tool stack. Might not be otherwise.) Bottom line reason, though... joy Having coded a fair amount in several different languages over the years (C, PHP, Perl and Python), I always have the MOST FUN programming in Python. And Django is my favorite web framework too.

For some weird reason I've loved Prolog ever since I've learned about it. The likelihood I'll ever use it to develop something practical is very slim though
![]() These days I'm all about PHP for my websites, Python for server maintenance and automation and Java for a desktop application I'm developing at the moment. Tyrus

Its strange how so many people like PHP, i didnt like it so much.
I persoanlly prefer Perl due to it being designed for word manipulation, which happens to suit very well to webpages normally. |

Oh, and .NET of course. I've done my share of PHP, Old school ASP, Pascal, PIK Basic, tiny bit of COBOL, and C. If I'm writing something myself, it's going to be in C# and .NET. Ostrich99 |

Like many of you, I've also programmed in numerous languages.... but for web programming, I've settled on a C/C++ CGI with an Sqlite database....
nothing like the sheer power of the machine, with no interpreter to get in the way! |

Do program in PHP also in conjunction with WordPress But as far as beginners go I don't think PHP is a good choice. Easy to learn but you will most likely program badly. |

Hands down. C#.
I can code circles around any script kiddie with C# and optimize my hardware resources in the process because... get this now... pay close attention.... IT'S COMPILED AS A BINARY Binary code executes exponentially faster, with fewer resources, than any interpreted script that has to parse at runtime. This means that I can serve far more users and visitors to a website using the same hardware resources than I can with a site written in PHP or even ASP. |
