It looks like Kevin has a new book on the same subject:
Home - PHP & MySQL: Novice to Ninja, 5th Edition

However, this is the one I learned from:
Amazon.com: Build Your Own Database Driven Web Site Using PHP & MySQL (9780980576818): Kevin Yank: Books

If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM :)

Go to Lynda.com and get one of the many tutorials. If you'd rather learn by reading, you can try "Learning PHP, MySQL and Javascript" by Nixon from O'Reilly. You can find that on amazon, i think that it costs somewhere around 20-30$. Good luck!

Has anyone tried the PHP course from Mark Lassof of LearnToProgram.tv?

His courses are video based and he seems to be a good trainer.

That's where I am learning too. He's just written a new one (PHP & MYSQL Novice to Ninja). If that's as good as the first one, you'll be flying through it. I'm by no means a php expert, but I'm learning because of the book.

If you want REAL value and great tutorials, try learnable.com. You can read all the books online, and depending on your membership level, download a couple.

It is well worth it, and it explains everything. It was just what I was looking for, so give it a go.

Good luck with it,

Andy.

w3schools.com is the best place to get tips on programming in php. If you are planning on programming in Drupal/Magento/Joomla/Wordpress, I'd suggest picking up a book that is specific to the type of site you will be working on, as you will also learn the tools that will be helpful to you.

Re: PHP tutorial

I would suggest learning from an open source mvc framework like codeigniter, cake, symphony, etc....

It might seem a little intimidating at first, but with frameworks you will be able to develop projects much faster and at the same time you will learn php basics.

Codeigniter is the easiest to learn

If you want to learn more about PHP, a lot of site that you can visit. One of the best site to learn PHP is "php-forum". You can learn more, basic, middle, and expert there.

Re: PHP tutorial

I agree with teguhyuliantos
Forums like
phpfreaks.com
phpbuilder.com
digitalpoint.com

helped me out a lot. However using these forums succesfully does require you not to be lazy and always first read the php.net before you ask questions otherwise you will not get any help.

Re: PHP tutorial

The best PHP/Mysql book I own is "Murach's PHP/MYSQL" You can get it at pretty good discount on amazon.

For free video tutorials try Youtube, there are TONS of programming how to video's on most languages. Some video's are horrible but many are good, stick with the trainers that teach in the way you best learn, check out their sites and buy their products if they have any.

Re: PHP tutorial

I find w3schools tutorials hard to read. Too much going on in their pages. I prefer to purchase books that give more detail and specific examples of uses that you aren't provided at w3schools. Youtube and other sites are something I also use though sites like lynda.com offer much better all around education on basics of languages like php, css, javascript and what have you for visually oriented learners.

I use all that are available but w3schools, personally I just find their pages hard to read with all the stuff going on their pages. It's great resource though.
