Default Web Server OS

I'm setting up a new virtual dedicated server, it will be my second. I'm a windows guy but I'm tired of having to dance around trying to get everything working for things like joomla, wordpress, phpbb.

I've chosen to go linux for this server and I'm curious what you folks think as far as OS goes. Fedora 7 , CentOS 4, or CentOS 5. I have some experience with hpux and sun solaris but would still consider myself a noob.

What's the best OS to learn on? Also the VDS has minimal memory at 256mb and will have plesk running.

Thanks!

Charles

I prefer CentOs 5 I use it on all my virtual machines that I use localy to test templates themes on almost every type of platform joolma wordpress phpbb magento Os Commerce ect.. and I was no linux guru or anything still not but if you have the option to set up a virtual player where you can test your server I suggest doing that just a thought

I put my vote in for CentOS. It's the best web server platform, imoh.

My VPS is Centos 5. Can't go wrong.

The only other I'd consider using is Ubuntu, and that's because I already have an Ubuntu laptop. Could prove useful to have a matching OS on both the server & your everyday machine..

When choosing a server platform don't just settle for technicalities. Stuff like documentation and support from a big community are extremely important

That said, I usually go with Debian or Ubuntu.

The only thing I've really tried and worked on was Ubuntu, it was okay and does the job.

I went ahead with centos5, I tossed a phpbb3 forum with lots of mods on and will do some testing before migrating some live sites over. So far I'm not really impressed with the speed but with plesk running and only 256mb of memory I suspected as much. The same site on my 2003 windows server is much more responsive but the VDS has 512mb.

Thanks for all your thoughts!

CentOS or Ubuntu, they're both very user-friendly when it comes to running a simple LAMP server as you appear to be doing.

Hello! :-) Debian is fantastic. I agree that it should at least
be considered before the OP makes a final decision. Departing
from Linux for a moment, I'd also recommend evaluating the
FreeBSD operating system. The best answer might ultimately
be to make the commitment to try an OS for at least 90 days.

If it doesn't work out, or the OP is uncomfortable with things,
the option to try something else should be available. I know,
easier said than done once everything is setup and configured.

But still, by allowing oneself an escape path might help make
the initial decision of which Linux based OS to go with slightly
less challenging. Anyway, I hope the OP found this helpful in
making a decision about what OS to use.
