Adding Password Protection To Site

Hello Warriors, I'm goin nuts here. I'm looking to add password protection to a particular website. Now I am not a "techie" here so I'm lookin to see if any of you more tech savvy folks can steer me in the right direction.

What I'm looking for is when someone types in my URL, a box will pop up, and they will have to enter their user/password to get access to the page.

So if you know of some where I can go learn this or some tutorial or something you could refer me too that would be awesome!!

Do you have cpanel? If so, just click on the icon for "Password Protect Directories" and select the subfolder you would like to protect.

Thanks for your replies. I was working with the C Panel today. My hosting service and I trying to work it out. But the tutorial they were showing didnt match what my FTP manager looked like.

I thought I would see if there was a different way. I will get back on the horn with them and stick it out.

If you want to do it in cPanel, just log into your cPanel (not your FTP.. just log in through your browser at http://yourdomain.com:2082 or https://yourdomain.com:2083) and look in the "Security" section for an icon called Password Protect Directories.

From there you can click on any directory and it lets you turn password protection on or off, and gives you a page where you can add usernames and passwords who can log into that directory.

If you don't want to do it by hand in cPanel, there are quite a few membership scripts that can do it. I remember an old PLR membership manager script floating around that you can probably find free somewhere and it worked the same way as cPanel's protection does (.htaccess) but it's automated in a script. I know every version of JVManager could do this (even remotely on another server.. lol) so I imagine that'll be an option with DELAVO too, and you can get that one free from John Delavera this week only (supposed to launch Tuesday, it was delayed because "something" happened.. lol).

Yes, the easiest way is to do Cpanel. It will do exactly what you are looking for...and your host should know this!
