Not sure if this is in the right forum, was either here or the Web Design forum...

Anyway, I want to learn web design/development, basically so I can create better sites, themes, plugins etc for Wordpress, but I don't know where to start.

I'm looking at joining Treehouse but I'm not sure which courses they offer I should be looking at.

I have a Lynda.com account already, but again, that places seems a little bit disorganised and unstructured.

Can anyone advise how I should start?

I use Lynda and find the site really easy to use.

There are loads of web design topics and courses including WordPress.

Lynda also provide a great 'learning matrix center' section to home in on your learning strategy.

Lynda.com has excellent trainers. If you signup, search for Morten Rand-Hendricksen or check out this page, Training, tutorials & online classes by expert Morten Rand-Hendriksen. You will be well versed in all facets of Word Press. I think you will find the videos, exercise files, and trainers to be top notch.

Lynda has some fantastic more in depth courses on specific regions or topics
I haven't gone on treehouse myself
There is a good web development course in Udemy that should help you, I found it quite useful but it depends on what you want to learn specifically.
Here's the Udemy corse if you want to check it out.

I vote for Lynda also. I find the training to be very high quality and comprehensive. I'm currently going through the php with mysql essential training. They have a lot of web development and programming courses.

Don't know why people put web design and web development in the same bucket as they are 2 completely different things.

For web design there are a ton of things to learn:
    - What colors go together
    - How to design web pages for various screen sizes
    - User Experience
    - etc.

Web development is a completely different beast. For this you need to learn various languages such as CSS, HTML, PHP and JavaScript (if you want to work with WordPress).

To learn both things at the same time would be an overkill and all you'll end up doing is either designing or developing crap templates.

Seriously, pick a path. As you learn more about one area you can start crossing the 2 over.

    Just my opinion...

I feel they are somewhat different, but I also believe that you need to know both, especially if you're going into the web design field. With the plethora of templates available, especially for Word Press, the aesthetics of a site are pretty much taken care of. I think the web development side is more important to learn up front, and that's where someone should spend the majority of their time.

When I was taking web design classes, design and development went hand in hand. We needed to know what colors went together, how to create graphics for a site using Photoshop and Illustrator, and how to develop a site using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. All of it was just as important, and none of this happened all at once. It was a process, it took time and every aspect of it was very important.

I used Treehouse for several months. It was a pretty cool experience, but in all honesty, I find that I learn faster on my own anyhow. They have a pretty solid set of PHP and Ruby courses, and they should also have the new Python courses up and running by now (they were still in development when I was a member, which was about a year ago.)

Pretty sure they have a free trial that you can check out.

Lynda tutorials are best for web design and some other topics...But when I learn about something I always try to find 2 or 3 tutorials for that topic whether it is a web design, windows servers, programming etc..Try CBT Nuggets they are also cool..
