And I thought flatfile forums were dead. At first glance it looks like phpbb.

No, but I will test it.
I hope to use it as a simple forum somewhere.
My webhotel's MySQL servers have a
tendency to fall out to often.
But, I guess that is common on shared hosts.

Also check out FlatPress as a blog platform.

It's the money issue all over again...
And it only the DB servers that sucks.
      Not the webservers.

if you don't mind me asking, what is the expected size and estimated traffic of your project? while flatfile storage is perfectly fine, it hinders expansion and limits optimization. I use OVH as my hosting provider and use the bare-bones basic vps at $4/month, and it rocks. I continually load drupal and wordpress sites on the server, for staging. because it is such a basic machine I really only load one at a time, but it suites my needs. But truthfully, if it can handle a D8 site, I'm sure the $4/month machine will handle your forum

caveat emptor: when setting up the server, you can choose the distro and preload some codebases, such as drupal or wp, but be prepared to ssh in as root and get your hands dirty getting it setup they way you want. I'm not sure any of the distros have cpanel....they may, just haven't seen it.

Well, this might serve a (very small) niche, but I would never recommend flat file bulletin boards. The site would probably go down after you have just a couple of dozen users browsing at once. If you can't use mysql, at least it should be SQLite.

I just installed it locally. It looks really good and still works.
