Best approach for new social site

I have been wanting to create a new social site that links members in a very unique way. Nothing like it in any of the sites I have come across. But I do not know the programming side and will be totally dependant on a turn-key system. Security against attacks is a big concern for me.

For you guys who know much more about programming, should I use something massive like WordPress (for security through plug-ins) and hire out the add-on code so it can perform the way I need it to? Or should I use one of the smaller social website packages that is more geared towards what I am wanting to do in the first place and hire out the code work on that?

If an off the shelf product will provide some of the features you need it will probably be worth using it as a base. Wordpress is fine so long as you keep it up to date. Wordpress is easily extendable with either pre-existing plug-ins or custom developed ones. Many wordpress developers are readily available I can't speak for other platforms but am sure other solutions would exist.

Buy some PHP based script and customize it OR outsource the development of a complete social website, beginning with scratch (somewhat more expensive).

You are right that Wordpress is not very effective from the point of view of website security
    and scalability.

If you're concerned about security, and you should be, I wouldn't recommend Wordpress.

You won't be able to do it without an experienced programmer.
I can help you either with price/timeframe estimate or point you what would you need to know to develop it yourself if you want to spend your time learning/trying .
