Advice needed for a new site

Hello warriors,

I want to open a new site with four separate functions.

1. local business directory
2. classified ads
3. job board
4. shopping forum

I am not a technical person but I can manage basic installations.

I plan to put these different functions in different directories or sub-domains but if there is any better suggestion, I am glad to hear.

I plan to use different wp plugins.

My question is, do I need to install different wordpress script for all four sunctions, or, can I do all four functions in just one wordpress site?

Let me know.

Thank you

    Hi.

If that is one site with different functions then you should probably go with one Wordpress + plugins. Pros: easier to manage, one account for all functions. Do you see any cons for this option in your case?

You said you're not a technical person. In this case, you should probably get some professional help with your project.

Sounds like you're going to need a database and your site will have to take some user input. If so, there will be some security issues you will have to handle. If you don't know what you're doing, you should get some help.

      Hi Joe,

Yes, I should probably hire someone, but before I do that, I want to make sure I'm in the right path to at least minimize the cost.

I am running a very successful local news site but I have to spend most of my daily time in this site in order to maintain my earnings.

This new plan would allow me to relax a little bit because I want a site with user-generated content.

This will be a long-tern plan so I must have a very good preparation before hiring someone.

Wordpress is definitely not the "right path" for this project.

I agree here. Everyone always wants to use wordpress....for everything! Its not always best just because it has plugins or because it seems easier for you in the beginning.

If you cant code, its not really that expensive to have a script developed these days.

Developing a script like this will be better. You have full control of the functionality...You're developing it, it will work 100% as you intend for it to. You can develop more on top of it as you need as well.

I know you mentioned using WordPress. I tried doing this before (creating my own local business directory) with WP but found something even better.

Check out eDirectory - Online Directory Software, Local Business Directories and consider it as an alternative to WP. Don't get me wrong, I use WP for all of my websites and blogs, but for something like what you want to set up, these guys have nailed it.

I'm pretty sure they have 4/4 features you are looking for.

On your case I would also recommend the one wordpress installation with the different plugins. Then you can offer one account to users for access to all 4 services but at the same time can make each area feel and act standalone as well if you go with the sub domains setup.

And I would definitely recommend hiring an developer (like myself) to help you with this so they can integrate the various plugins you choose for you. Plus can advise you on added security measures to protect your WP installation from hacks, etc.

Hope that helps and let me know of any questions.

  • Instead of using number of plugins, I would suggest you to get your website coded and manage it later. Too many plugins would affect your website speed.

If you are not much into the technical stuff then plugin is always an option. But consider this option as well.

You an use wp, but it is not much secure. Any hacker can steal your confidential information. If security is not an issues for you, then you can go with wp. There are number of free plugins available you can use with custom templates. But I would recommend to use framework, instead of simple wp site. You can hire an expert to fulfill your needs and make your site much secure.

Or you can start with simple wp then migrate it into core php when you start earning and feel security is an issue.

you can use wordpress for this fine, do your research and test out a number of different plugins for each of your requirements... the advantage is you can have the same user base accessing each of the different features.

the subdomain setup may need some extra thought and playing around with to get it right. one option there might be to use a multisite install and make each of the subdomains a separate site with the plugins needed for it. don't worry about having too many plugins, you can optimize what is loaded where later but may need a developer to do this for you.

as for the mention of security, wordpress itself is actually fairly secure and there are a number of security plugins you can install in any case.

I've been thinking about your project and another software that comes to mind which would be great for the sub-domains setup is Joomla, which also has a great selection of plugins and will work right out of the box with the different sub domains.

Takes a little more work than WP to setup, but in the end is a more expandable base software than WP.
