What's The Best Server Option For Hosting Images?

3 replies
So our website is running on two servers: one for image files to prevent image issues. Right now, we have an NFS-shared drive, but images are loading slow when we get more traffic. Our image server RAM is not fully used and not under stress but we still have slow image loading under traffic.

What's the best way to fix this problem? What server should we use for image files for our content to avoid the slow-loading issues?

    Have you thought of trying Amazon S3/CDN or you have to use your infrastructure ?

    We have to use our infrastructure and yes, we've used S3 before but we had some security issues when we used it.

      Well Dropbox uses S3 AFAIK so those issues are likely to be fixed, but I don't know the details, I know that bucket permissions can be sometimes complicated, but they should be flexible .

      If you want some advice please describe your network/server infrastructure.

      You need to find the bottleneck. It can be pretty much anywhere

      [INTERNET] -> [Your ISP] -> [Your Firewall/Router] -> [ Your Web Server] ->[ your server network?]-> [ Your Data Server ]

      I'm not sure if I read you correctly - but you say you use NFS ? Where and for what ?
      You need to reduce the paths. If you do something like you map NFS to your webserver .. than
      it probably can be a bottleneck, although I'm not NFS expert.
      Can't you serve images directly from a internet facing server ?

      Also :
      Do you use any solution like Varnish for serving files ?
      What's the amount of requests/data we're talking about .I.e. average requests per minute & Mb sent ?
      What's the total amount in GB of images you have + what is your monthly images transfer ?
