Help with PageSpeed, do I need mod_deflate?

Hi,

Webmaster tools recommends compressing my site with mod_deflate but my host doesn't offer it.

Is that common or do most hosts offer it these days?

Would you move your site over something like that?

Webmaster tools says "Enable compression for the following resources to reduce their transfer size by 51.9KiB (67% reduction)." I don't know if that's a lot...

    Hello,

If you have a bandwidth intensive site, and you are having page load speed issues, then you may benefit by using mod_deflate. That said, if you are on an really old or substantially overloaded server, the server itself could suffer a performance decrease once mod_deflate is enabled.

67% reduction is a lot, but IMO 52kb is not enough to worry about...but then again, I deal in graphic intensive sites so an extra 52kb weight is not a really big deal to me.

To give you an idea of file weight...I just created the image below which weighs in at 52kb.

I thought almost all Apache hosts allow mod_deflate these days... If you are happy with your host and your page load speeds, then don't worry about it. If you are, move.

Usually, you get what you pay for with web hosts --> I decided about 14 years ago that skimping is not the best way to go.

    Cheers

That's what I was wondering, I have no idea but it could be a really old server, I started using this hosting company 16 years ago...

They said in order to have access to mod_deflate I would have to go from paying 8 dollars a month to 178 dollars a month. Is that how much it costs at other hosts?

Nah, you don't have to pay $178 a month. Just look around for a shared host that has mod_deflate installed and you will be good. Quite often the host will have it installed but not enabled.

Where is a good place to research hosts? Is Dream Host good? Hope that's okay to ask here...
