How much would something like this cost?

I'm not sure if this is in the right section or not but I wasn't sure where to put it. If it's wrong, I apologize and please migrate as appropriate.

I have an idea for a web app but I am not a programmer so I have no idea how much it would cost to develop. The basic idea is that it would collect data (statistics, rss feeds, etc.) from various programs and consolidate that information into one site. I'd then want basic (to start with) reporting queries to be run so people can see summaries at a glance or look at each program specifically.

The app would need to be very secure because we'd be storing user name and passwords for log-in and some of the information would be financial in nature. There would obviously need to be a DB attached to store the login data and the downloaded data so reports can be run over a longer date range.

I'd like to start with maybe 5-10 programs and then add more programs and functionality as time goes on.

To just do the first phase with just the first 5-10 applications and basic reporting information, how much would it cost (general guesstimate is fine) and how long would it probably take?

If you need more info to provide a guesstimate, please let me know and I'll provide whatever info I can without getting into the specifics about the project.

Thanks!

Without knowing more about the complexity of each program and all, I'd guess at in the $x,xxx range. Probably low $x,xxx.

As a tip (since as you say financial data, etc, will be stored), go with a good programmer with a good reputation. Avoid one with little experience and/or one who claims they can do this for (say) $10 per hour or less. It wouldn't be worth it.

Just to give you a number to go off of, I would say around $4,000 but this could vary greatly based on many things. Just get with a programmer/company and they will give you a quote.

Ok, thanks you guys. I knew it wouldn't be a specific quote just wanted a guess as to whether I was looking at $x,xxx or $xxx, xxx. Would make a difference about if/when I go ahead with development. I'll try to talk to a programmer. Any recommendations for people who do quality work for reasonable prices?

      Your welcome

If possible look for a site like Rent A Coder or similar freelance websites. There allow coders to submit bids on your project (and you can see each coder's reputation and all), hence you will be in a strong position when you come to choose a coder.
