changing the permalink for WP blog

Hi

Can someone guide me thru the process of changing the permalink pls?

I don't understand much of what I see in Using Permalinks WordPress Codex

My permalink is currently like this
"blog/?p=27"

But I want it to be like this
"blog/title-of-post"

I'm not sure how to change the .htaccess file.
In fact I was advised to go here
Using Permalinks WordPress Codex
for help on solving the issue but as I said
I don't understand much of what it's saying.

Go to settings/Permalinks and where it says custom structure add this: /%postname%/ if you want it so it shows categories/postname add this instead: /%category%/%postname%/

If you are using categories go to the section titled Optional and where the Categories base field is insert a full stop "." (no quotes)

Save changes and you are done

I uploaded a short video that should help you but it looks like Leanne has given you the info you need. I will post the video just in case you are not familiar with your wp software.

    Hope this helps...

but before that, go to your ftp, and CHMOD a .htaccess file to 777
it will allow you to change the permalink setting.

PS : after successfull change, please CHMOD .htaccess file back to 757

    Hey all
I know how to do all that.
The only problem I have is,

I don't know how to update my .htaccess

What do I do? I changed the permissions to 777 but I get this message

If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn't so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.

I see a code, but what am I supposed to do with it?

If this didn't work then try to rename your .htaccess to .htaccessold and try again. remember you need to change the permissions back to keep hackers out of your space and don't forget to rename your htaccessold back to .htaccess

There is also a possibility that there are issues on your server. I have a site hosted on a server that will not allow me to change the settings through my ftp software and I had to contact the hosting company to have them change the settings. This is very uncommon with this hosting company and they offered to move me to another server at no charge because they could not locate the problem. So, you may want to call your host tech support and ask them to check on your chmod settings on your htaccess file.

If you are still having problems after this, please send me a PM telling me who your hosting service is and if I am familiar with them I may be able to help you.

      Good luck!!! Will
