My insurance broker (www.gilletteins.com) is telling me that I need liability insurance for my web development company. I do a lot of work with database management systems as well so he said the concern is that if I lose a company's important data that I could be liable for it. Is this true? Does anyone have any experience with this?

It depends on your company and your country. You really need to understand the legal part if you are working with customers. If you really can be responsible for lawsuit - make LLC.
Also remember, you broker wants to sell you as much products as he can, that is why don't use broker as adviser.
