How do I "uninstall" wordpress from my site?

Hi all,

I have hosting with hostgator and I have a domain name with them which I installed wordpress to make a blog. However, now I want to use this domain for the purpose of putting up a squeeze page, as I was not getting much success with it being a blog.

My question is, how do I wipe this site clean and start fresh? Do I simply go into the public_html folder and delete everything? If so, what files do I leave behind? Everything looks like a cluttered mess in there.

Also, another question: with this blog, I submitted it to various RSS feeds and such and it's indexed in Google, would I get penalized by Google if I suddenly change it to a squeeze page about making money when the original blog was about home gardening?

Delete any files or folders prefixed with 'wp', then delete the database using phpMyAdmin - do so at your own risk though.

Yes, deleting the files and the associated database would do the trick. Make sure you don't delete your cgi bin directory (although in most cases thats an empty directory anyway).

If you installed WordPress using Fantastico it's even easier, just go into Fantastico, select WordPress, select your blog and use the link to delete it. Fantastico will delete the appropriate files and the database as well.

Of course it's always a good idea to make a copy of this first, just in case you realize that there was something you actually wanted to save!

Thank you everyone, and to delete the database, I have to go into my cpanel, go to MySQLDatabases, and go to 'current databases' and click 'Delete Database', is that correct?

And are there any SEO consequences for drastically flipping a site like this?

As Bill said the easiest way to get rid of wordpress is to use fantastico. In your c-panel go down to the bottom and click on it. On the left side near the top you will see wordpress. Click on it.

Now you should see a list of your domains, click on the one you want to remove wordpress. It should now say you can view it or remove it. Click on remove and its gone, not a trace left behind.

Sometimes if I screw up while playing with the code of a theme I will just delete the whole thing and start over. Its take about 2 minutes to remove one wordpress and install a fresh one in its place.

      Good Luck!
