changing WP permalinks

I did this before and now cannot figure out how I did. Looking at permalinks in WP they come up as /?p=164
Nothing new here. But before on one of my WP sites it always came up as: /article_title_here

I cannot figure out what I did to make this work. I think it is a plugin but which one?

Thanks for any help.

    Permalinks are not plugin defined.

    That are native to Wordpress.

You need to go to Settings - Permalinks

    You can change it there.

    I prefer a custom permalink /%post_id%/%postname%/

You will need to make the changes that Wordpress give to you to your .htaccess file if you need to with your hosting account.

The .httaccess file usually lives in your main www or public_html directory.
