OK, Warrior-Coders,

Share your favourite languages here...

I'll start:

I Love PHP, especially in conjunction with SQL (any flavor). Quite into Perl and Javascript, too

I'm sure I'd like php more if I had as much experience with it as I've had with shell scripting.

So, I like unix shell scripting.

But I'd have some serious products out there if my php skills were up there with my shell scripting skills.

Of course, I've had my share of enjoying assembly language.

      And turbo-pascal was fun.

I spent years using PHP but have since moved on to much more powerful web frameworks. Now I basically only write web stuff in Python using the Django framework.

PHP is awesome for a quick script though, especially one that's highly portable across basically any web host. I host my own web sites so using a custom setup isn't a problem. I'm too much of a geek I guess LOL..

Oh man… now you’ve got me thinging about the good old days.

I’ve done a lot of programming in my time… Basic, Pascal, Perl, Python, VB, C, C++ Java… not to mention the scripting languages for the web.

I used to ba a Web Infrastructure Engineer! :<>

I love programming, but I’m not into as much anymore – no time, and I tend to need a bigger paycheck nowadays than programming can provide. LOL

However, I do still try to keep my skills up-to-date with the latest technologies. I think C# and VB.NET and the whole .NET framework is pretty cool… MS finally coming up with a true Entrprise development solution that can compete with J2EE – much better than the old MS/COM/DNA.

Not sure what I love but I can tell you what I HATE...

            WINDOWS programming

            Why? Not my expertise!

I've been programming on UNIX platform for so long now... java, c, c++, various scripting etc.

I love programming for the web...Lately I've been getting back into php, only because it's in such high demand. My brother keeps bugging me to learn .net, has even showed me job offers just to entice me. Problem is, there isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want.

I plan to put some time aside in a few weeks to look at Adobe Air ... anyone else?

Yea, Adobe Air looks very cool. I've been wanting to dig into that but I'm much to busy with other things unfortunately.

PHP has its share of powerful web frameworks. I'm a user and huge supporter of Symfony. Did you know that del.icio.us and Yahoo! Bookmarks are PHP applications on the Symfony framework?

For offline stuff, C#.NET here, I worked at Microsoft for a while and they turned me to their side :p

Well said. Also, twitter is moving away from rails because of the trouble they've had (fail whale anyone)...

About the PHP frameworks and del.icio.us running on Symfony, etc.

That's cool. del.icio.us started out as a perl app if I remember correctly.

There are lots of large sites running on various frameworks.

I personally prefer Python / Django. Extremely powerful and oh so pretty python code..

                  Hi,

I love PHP with Mysql, Javascript (and Ajax) VB.NET, Delphi, and im trying to get to grips with C# as I want to start programing small xbox games (long way off though).

I think PHP is the now and the future. Sites like Facebook really show this as its one of the largest on the net and they seem to be doing fine with it.

Its interesting to see the new languages coming out as the web is developing so fast it really baffles me how much more advanced sites can become.

I love whatever helps me solve the problem in the quickest, easiest, most maintainable way possible.

I've written code in COBOL, Assembler (many flavors), fortran, pl/1, c, c++, java, perl, tcl, ADA, php, etc. etc. and it all comes down to solving the problem in the most efficient way.

That's what programming is all about anyway; solving problems. Any junior "coder" can write the code once you solve the problem for them. Solving the problem elegantly -- that's the hard part, and the best part.

It's basically a sandboxed version of the .NET WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) for the browser. You can communicate using webservices (soap/xml)
So really quite similar to flash, but the"advantage" being that you can basically use the same UI stuff for a windows app directly.

Why do you need to integrate with PHP for client-side stuff, PHP is a serverside technology?

Silverlight contains its own technology for connecting to databases and manipilating the client side. You don't need PHP at all.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to mention ... COBOL. Then there's IBM Assembler and NCR Neat/3. Those were the days!!

I've just finished revisiting COBOL by writing a system that analysed a survey questionaire - HTML form - and produced stats. Great fun to discover that after 34 years I could still do it.

Hee hee, if you can cope with CGI and Perl, then PHP (or most any modern technology) would be a doddle.

PHP isn't really that different in language from C, C++, C#, Java, etc, and so as a Perl programmer, you could pick up the language quickly. If you are used to CGI, then you will like the way that PHP mixes up the coding with the HTML. That's actually one of the things I really don't like about PHP (and my memories of doing CGI and Perl for that matter), but it would make your transition easier.

C# and ASP.NET, SQL Server 2005. I like PHP too, but only for small scripts like collecting email addresses or for PayPal IPN. Windows hosting accounts used to be more than Linux based, but now they seem to be equal. I get clients that want me to use either of those languages, so it doesn't matter much to me.

You're not the only one. I too love Flash and AS3 - though I'm doing Flex development now - which will soon be confusingly called flash development in the near future as flex 4 becomes known as flash builder 4.

PHP is also my favorite for server side. I can't stand .Net, not because I hate MS or anything like that - it just doesn't play well with front-end development.

That's cool. del.icio.us started out as a perl app if I remember correctly.

There are lots of large sites running on various frameworks.

I personally prefer Python / Django. Extremely powerful and oh so pretty python code..
I agree. Php is fun and all and great for quick mods to all the stuff that's written in php, but Python/Django is far more powerful, and since its written in Python, its fun too! Problem is, I've never used it for a public web site, just for internal company sites, so I don't know how to find hosts that give you both ssh access and a good enought Python environment to implement Django. Does anyone know if hostgator etc allow site development in Django?

Currently I work mostly with Classic ASP/VB Script, Visual Basic 6, VBA (Access programming), and now PHP. I've done a little work with C and C++, but it's been a while. And like others, I haven't had the time to get into .NET.

Ahhh, Pascal. That's the first programming language I ever learned - it has a very special place in my heart! I think I still have the original text book from 20 years ago.

And of course Assembly - I think I got a B in that college class. But I don't think I could even produce "Hello, World" using it now.

At home I still program in C, just to keep the mind going. I tried my hand at C++ when it first came out. And recently tried my hand at PHP. I like the simplicity of PHP. Looks cool. In fact, I've had some easy PHP hacks installed on some web projects. It's clean and easy to do.

But there's no time, really for doing these fun things. Too much into IM nowadays. LOL

I love all sorts of programming languages, it just depends on the purpose I suppose. For the web PHP and Python do amazing things with little overhead. For general everyday programming I like to use C++, but that's because it is what I am most familiar with and the cross-platform capabilities make it my go to language. I have dabbled with some Java and C#.NET, but haven't really done anything substantial with them yet.

My favourite platform is easily ASP.NET/C#

I have looked at PHP a few times since I got into IM, as it seems to be the most popular platform for Imers, but I really can't see why. To me it looks very primitive, much like Classic ASP (pre .NET) does.

Don't want to start a war over it though ;-)

Actually if you see that it looks primitive from a visual perspective it is because of the design of the site not the PHP. PHP is just a server side language that gives you the ability to present the data however you see fit in the design. So it isn't the PHP that is making it look primitive.

I didn't mean site design. I was looking at it from a programmer's point of view. I used Classic ASP for years, and moved to ASP.NET about two years ago. With all due respect, that probably invalidates your opinion on their platform then

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you approach anyone's technology with an attitude against the company, then you will have a biased opinion of the technology.

Now I'm not defending MS's arrogant business tactics, I agree that they have acted very badly many times over the years, but this does not alter the facts about their technology.

Sure, everyone has their faves, and that's fine, but don't judge a technology by the business activities of the company.

Don't know where you saw that. .NET is certainly fine for very large scale enterprise applications, not just for small to medium ones. There are plenty of them around to prove the point.

Sorry but that is just rubbish. php can easily handle large scale multi-tier applications just as .net can. Sliverlight does look promising, but I think you mean c# with silverlight and not c++ yes? Its all about choosing the tool that makes you productive for the platform you are targetting and you certainly wouldnt choose c++ for any quick website development. ebay is actually written (from years back) using an ISAPI dll, perhaps in C or perhaps in another 3gl, difficult to say.

Me I still love Delphi, ok no good for the current demand for web based apps but great for win32 apps, when i do do webby then its php/mysql with a javascript framework and there are some cool ones out there.

Nah no worries I wasn't arguing with you...I was just guessing that you may have looked at it from a design perspective...I think all languages have their good points and bad points. I'm not a javascript/Ajax fan...but I still see many uses for it. Probably guessed I am not an ASP fan either...but like ajax and javascript I do see the usefulness on the client side aspects.

For client side data manipulation I was playing with Flex...but since I never did much of anything with actionscript...it has driven me mad lol. But if I actually took the time to apply myself I may get the hang of it.

          That was my take too.
Mostly because I love strong type casting and separating the UI from the codes as much as possible.

I'd much rather catch something at compile time instead of run time.

But then again, I've read stuff that indicates that probably just means my testing methodology needs work.

I think PHP is nice enough for web-scripts, it's nowhere the best or prettiest, but you can whip up a PHP script and have it working on a multitude of hosts very easy. Releasing "public" web-software that requires a JVM or .NET limits the customer base radically...

The speed with which you can whip up a script is more determined by how fluent you are with the language. I could whip up an ASP.NET page very quickly, and it would be 1000 times more elegant than any PHP script.

Except that ASP.NET does not require .NET on the client, only on the server. Since you have control over the server, this is simply not an issue.

This wasn't meant to be an advert for ASP.NET by the way, just that both of the points you raise happen to be relevant to it

        Which reminds me.

Silverlight does require .NET on the client as far as I know.

Have you seen the new plan for MS and .NET.

The time to get up and running with Microsoft product is in my experience so easy and fast compared to Java(J2EE/JEE) or PHP.

Ever since the free versions of Visual Studio, Visual Web Developer Express Edition, Visual C# Express Edition and SQL Server Express arrived I'm seriously into writing systems for the .NET platform and using these free tools for my own projects.

Started learning .NET the other day and I've got to say I'm pretty impressed. It all seemed a bit overwhelming at first but the videos on asp.net are a huge help. Plus the fact that my brother is a .NET fanatic helps!

I'm learning .NET for two reasons - one being that my team in my "day job" just merged w/ another team whose skills are all .NET so I'm pretty sure I'll be getting to put these new skills to use soon and two being that my brother keeps hounding me to learn it, and I figured it's a good framework to get some solid experience in. I'm pretty much leaning towards C# though, quite easy to pick up since I know Java. Not a big fan of VB...

Next step is to figure out why I'm having so much trouble installing SQL Server 2005. I think I'll just uninstall it all and go for SQL Server 2008. Seems it's having trouble with the MSXML part.. frustrating!

.. back to uninstalling all these flipping components..

    I love PHP.

I have been programming since 1982 and I've programmed with just about everything (BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, Assembly, VB, Perl,C, C++, Java, etc. ... even Ada! Anybody else ever programmed in Ada? I see your hand DallasL.)

But for sheer simplicity and that instant gratification of seeing something come together in a web browser...

    I love PHP.

I love it so much that I left my senior programming position at NASA working on the Space Shuttle simulator where the astronauts learn to fly their missions so I could do PHP programming on the web for ecommerce.

How's that for loving a language?

I couldn't agree more. Creating web applications with front-end in valid HTML + jQuery user interface, back-end PHP and (if needed) more serious back-end algorithms written in Java turns out to be the best, most reliable and fastest way of online coding in my experience.

Whoa, this thread brings back old memories, although I'm a kiddie compared to some of the veteran programmers here

Back in 9th grade, I programmed in C and C++. They're still my favorite languages. There's something about that Borland Turbo Editor's blue screen that I can't RESIST! Been a while since I did anything in C/C++ though.

I've also done some VB6 and VB .Net programming. To me, they spell convenience. To be able to "draw" a button without writing any code - that's kinda cool

C++ is my favorite with PHP/MySQL combo being a close second.

    .NET environment all the way.

No matter which one you choose performance is arguably (technically should be) the same.

    Preference for C# though.

If you want performance I go down the assembly route. Debugging is definitely the biggest factor though.

I'd add that PHP has the most money making potential in the widest range of apps.

You can create brand new web app from scratch with it and sell it.

Or you can enhance existing product/service/tool - and sell your enhancement.
Most of the web backend creativity is build on PHP so knowing it well opens opportunities.

You can do that with any other...

What makes PHP so great is that it's free and openly supported (given it's open source too), and it runs well and highly supported on free operating systems too (even in commercial environments).

For code I write myself, as opposed to hire out or otherwise delegate...

What I love, personally: Python and Django.

    Disadvantages:
Compared to e.g. Wordpress + PHP, not nearly so many plug-n-play scripts and addons.
Can be more expensive to hire contractors (way more PHP devs out there... larger labor pool).

    Advantages:
    My favorite language

Another advantage: if I need to do something for which no reusable tool already exists, it's quick and easy *for me* to do it in Python + Django. (Because I'm nearly an expert in the tool stack. Might not be otherwise.)

Bottom line reason, though... joy Having coded a fair amount in several different languages over the years (C, PHP, Perl and Python), I always have the MOST FUN programming in Python. And Django is my favorite web framework too.

    IT'S COMPILED AS A BINARY

Binary code executes exponentially faster, with fewer resources, than any interpreted script that has to parse at runtime. This means that I can serve far more users and visitors to a website using the same hardware resources than I can with a site written in PHP or even ASP.

Thats not strictly true, its complied into IL which is actually bytecode and runs interpreted and therefore needs a runtime (the .net framework), proper compilation is a single executable with *no* runtimes or external dependancies.

That said it is a great language and .net does a great job of caching c# code when used with asp.net to make performance as quick as possible.

PHP can be stored in bytecode format as well. No production web server should be running without a bytecode cache like APC. PHP6 will ship with it built into the core.

You don't write low level hardware-optimized code in C#, you write it in C or even processor-specific ASSEMBLY.

I love writing code. The language is largely irrelevant.

The winner of the language wars was the ALGOL-60 derivatives (including C/C++); the winner of the methodology wars was object-oriented programming. If you know those two things, you can work in pretty much whatever you like. C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, PHP, even CSS owes a shocking amount to the ALGOL-60 line.

If you really want to be good, learn Common LISP, VB, and at least two different assembly languages (one CISC and one RISC, if possible). You can't think the same way when you work with them, and understanding that will make you a MUCH better programmer.

What would I work in if I could only have one language for the rest of my life? C# and .NET, no contest. But I still love PHP, and Ruby, and C++ (even MFC), and - horror of horrors - COBOL.

Yes, you heard right, I love COBOL. It's nostalgic for me, and it pays outrageously - because the people who can use it are few and far between, and the number of those who will admit they can use it is shockingly small.

But there are still all those financial institutions who are running millions of lines of it, and the system can NEVER go down...

Perl with CGI, Templates, DBH and a few homegrown modules for Session Management, Version Control, etc. I guess I have been doing it so long that I have the correct set of pre-made tools that makes standing up a site or a page pretty quick and simple.

They have free Lite versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server and they are great. I think they are influenced by the open source world because they seem to be releasing free products quite often nowadays. Their old business models will probably not work aswell as the used to, now that Google is playing on their ground.

Their ability to package the products so one can get up and running fast is according to my knowledge not present in the open source world, I might be wrong but IMO they make it very ease to get started and provide some very good tools also.

I've been working with c# and the .NET framework for almost 10 years now it definitely is a powerful platform for web and desktop based apps. The past few years I've been branching out and studying other languages such as ruby, python, and other languages. I find it good to learn how other languages are implemented which makes me a better overall programmer.

Ruby and Rails is picking up a lot steam and I believe you'll see an increase in it's usage in the future because it allows you to build sites with very little code. Both Microsoft and the Java community recognize Ruby's popularity hence the creation of JRuby for the Java platform and IronRuby for the .NET platform.

I've only dabbled in php but it fits the bill for most web sites. It's fairly easy to learn and just about every host has support for php.

I build applications in both asp.net and php. I definately prefer working with asp.net over php. One of the big benefits is that there's some structure to asp.net that Microsoft has defined. It makes it easy to get projects from customers and take them over, since they follow a typical structure. With php, any project we get is programmed totally to the whim of whatever programmer made it. Some use frameworks, others don't. It's typically a mess. Also, once you've used Visual Studio to build a database driven site you'll never want to go back to programming database sites in php.

PHP is good for putting things together, but it's best to use it with a CMS system so you don't have to do so much work. Or maybe I'm just too lazy now.

I prefer ruby (not RoR, cause of the same thing that dh5114 mentions) or perl.

But tbo, i'm thinking of moving to java/groovy in the near future, as I like the idea of compiled code with it's own web-server functionality.

    Hi Everyone:

There comes a time where if you can't touch PHP, you're pretty much in the hands of others...

I've been a Clipper and C++ programmer in the old days and I'd like to take some type of PHP + MySQL crash course.

I just wanted to ask if anyone could recommend some good e-book or source out there I could get my hands on.

    Thanks to everyone in advance!

    Rob

I love VB.NET the most, only drawback I think in .NET is the scalability, as it is not like Java.
Working in RoR is easy still PHP and AJAX is best to work.

PHP is my favorite but I still don't know that much about it. I've created custom CMS's for myself and everything but I still only know the basics.

I usually let WordPress take care of the PHP part though and I just code valid XHTML/CSS.

I personally love ASP.NET with C# and Silverlight. I like it the most because of the fact that I am comfortable with C# programming language and its the easiest language to learn. Besides that ASP.NET does allow to create powerful websites too.

I love curl and firebug - Together you can use the information you find with firebug to send fake messages with CURL, so you can alter a web process that otherwise does not make sense. I have built several tools for my day job through this method, and it has resulted in several hours of recovered productivity. Oh and I love Java/PHP too

  • I am most thankful that I learned the C programming language because it gave me a solid foundation to learn new languages quickly and easily. I would highly recommend C to new programmers (even though it is a procedural language, and you need to also understand OOP concepts).

    Definitely PHP for me.

I absolutely hated it at first, after doing years of Perl. Seemed so restrictive at the time to me, but I've learned to love it.
