(Not sure where to post this.)

I'm (obviously) not very technical, so I'd like to ask:

1) What is the best way(s) to change my IP address?

2) If/when I go to a site (using the method(s) in #1, above), the site will presumably record my IP address, right? So what happens when days or weeks later I return to the same site .. will this proxie or script or whatever (per #1, above) remember what IP address it supplied for me when I last visited that site and present the same IP Address to the site?

3) Is there a way to find IP addresses that correspond to a specific geographic area?

Thanks,
Richard

Depends on you. Are you on a dynamic IP or static IP address when you subscribe to the Internet Service Provider.

There are ways to change your IP address (in a way mask it).

Or you can use VPN, that will change your IP too. Good luck

Hi, I am trying to do my marketing research using a proxy server. I this case proxify. When I use the intitle:"keyword"inanchor:"keyword", I can only get one or two searches before google gives me the message "we're sorry, but you appear to be making automated searches from your ip address. I thought that was the reason for using a proxy server, to remain anonymous. Can anyone help me with this? I have used proxify, hidemyass, and cloaker all with the same results.

You should look into paid proxy services. A proxy server will let you route all your internet activity through someone else's IP address. Although there are lots of free ones available; they are either slow/unreliable or already banned from many sites due to abuse.

A paid service ensures you get a quality proxy connection.

      LynxSI,

      Since I don't have 50 posts I can't send a PM so I'm posting this here...
      Hey mate,

I've noticed your reply on the recent post regarding IP Addresses. It's quite obvious you're knowledgeable in the subject and seeing that I'm trying to learn more about it, I offer you a trade...

While money is perhaps the most practical method, I'm skilled in an area you might wish to acquire knowledge about as well! For the last 5 years, I've been making my living traveling the world as a professional poker player - playing in WPT and WSOP events! I've taught poker for quite some time so if you care to learn, I'd be happy to exchange knowledge. You can look me up "traheho" is my online poker handle.

      Looking forward to talking!

      Alec

They can always bring back the IP you last visited their site with. They will either replace your current IP with old IP, or add new IP to their list.

They knew you came back visting again because of the cookies stored in your browser. They can't really know you are if you're using dynamic IP.

This is one nice tool: Lookup IP Address Details - enter the ip address and it can tell where you're from but not very precise for some countries, at least it can tell from which country.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Helpful. I might be contacting (PMing) some of you in the near future.

@ Sweety4 - Per RedFC's suggestion (post #7, above), I checked out Hide-My-IP.Com - Hide Your IP Address, Surf Anonymously, and Protect Your Identity and found they offer a guide for only $14.95.

        Thanks again guys,

You can download a trial copy, its simple. For hide my ip, all you need to do is hit the hide button and you're done.

It will tell you whether you're in hidding or not hidding mode.

Best and free solution is AOL.

    -Get a free AOL screenname/username
    -Download AOL 9.5
-Setup it to work with your internet connection (google it for instruction)

You will get new US IP everytime you login.

If your IP address is dynamic it will change automatically each time you reconnect to the internet.

If you really need to hide you IP address you can use a free websites such as hide-my-ip, anonymouse

      Thanks for the replies, guys!

@ Mihir: Would using AOL be enough to get around various online newspapers not wanting advertisers to post ads in more than one city? (Using AOL, could they tell that it's me, posting still another ad?)

      @ Dinushiya:

      1) Would having or using a "dynamic" IP address get me around the restriction I asked Mihir about, above?

      2) How do I find out whether my IP address is 'dynamic'? (Or do I have to pay for one from some company ... and if so, which one(s) would you recommend?)

      Thanks,
      Richard

I haven't checked geographical location of AOL's IPs. But you will get new IP everytime you signoff n signon. So you can get large number of unique IPs. Don't forget to clear your cookie/cache before trying to post from different IP

To check whether you have dynamic IP or static IP, check your current IP from ipchicken.com or whatismyip.com and note it somewhere. Now restart your modem/router and then check your IP again. If it's same, you have static IP, if it's different, you have dynamic IP.

If you're on a cable connection, your IP is probably dynamic. However, it probably won't change very often, only when your connection restarts. If you're on DSL, it's probably static.

I'm assuming that you mean to "hide" your IP address.

If so, you would want to use a fully anonymous proxy. Look around and you'll find lists of them. Many are defunct.

Anonymous proxy. I believe it would be a "level II". There are lists of them. See http://www.proxy-list.org/en/index.php as an example.

You can alywas use a VPN, which keeps you annonymous from hides your ip. or else you can buy a IP changer software.
If you are worried that the forum has recorded your initial IP and would ban you for using from another IP that doesn't make sense. you shouldn't be worried for that.

you may also want to spoof your MAC address (media access card), this number identifies your computer. IP identifies your spot on the network. to spoof the MAC, use a tool like 'mac makeup' - might even reset your ip in the process.

This worked for me in my experience, but from what I've read, it really depends on your ISP. I had to reset my cable modem after doing this. Technically, I didn't spoof my MAC address from my computer, I did it from my Cisco router, which has a built in configuration tool located at http://192.168.1.1/ (a local IP reserved for this purpose) that allows one to do this and many other things. If your system is attached to a router, the router is the first entry point that the modem identifies as your network, and is how it will identify you.

There's no sense in spoofing your MAC address. Here's a simple explanation why it makes no sense to do so: Can a MAC address be traced?

The thread isn't about privacy, which spoofing a MAC address definitely isn't reliable enough to give. It's about nudging your ISP into assigning you a new IP address. Changing your MAC address will do this if your ISP does the same as mine. As I indicated above, I have done it from my router and it had done exactly that.

The AOL proxy usually/if not always gives an IP that is located in Virginia, but any website that wants to restrict ads to local customers understands AOL and that the location of the AOL IP is not the location of the customer.

I've heard that the AOL proxy will not work from outside the USA
