Prevent Streaming Videos from Being Downloaded

Hi guys,

I have paid membership site with many streaming videos. I'm currently using Blip.tv with a pro account and all my videos are set to private.

I'm aware that you can easily view the source of the page and download the FLV file directly. I'm not concerned about that since 95%+ of users don't know how to do that.

One user mentioned today that a RealPlayer browser plugin automatically displays a link above streaming videos offering the user to download the video.

Has anyone heard of a way to prevent this?

    Craig, this was answered in a YouTube help topic:
    How to I DISALLOW others from downloading my vids? - YouTube Help
    (If that doesn't work, I searched for "disallow download" in YouTube help)

    Give that a shot, and see if RealPlayer turns off the Download button accordingly.

    If it works, sophisticated users could still use a downloading tool, but at least naive users would not have the download button right in front of them. I think this is what you wanted.

    Streaming video file is seen only as a real-time stream and there is no file left on the user's hard drive.but one thing I am not sure that is it possible to steal streaming video by using a video stream capture tool?

    Mr. Enthusiastic - that seems to be a YouTube specific issue. My videos are actually hosted on Blip.tv.

    Blazenetworks - There are many tools out there to download streaming videos but I was just wondering if it was possible to block the realplayer plugin on my site.

    The same thing happens when using Internet Download Manager. It shows an icon on top to start downloading when any streaming video or audio is present in a page.

    I dont think anything can be done on the server side.

    best way I know to prevent it is putting warning like "Downloading this video is prohibited" or something. looks maybe not so smart but it works quite good

No downloader is able to catch them.
