wordpress spam comment captcha/blocking recommendations?

Hey all,

Have a client that wants to block spam comments, either block them or add a captcha of some sort... figured I would see what some of you use.

AKISMET is NOT an option because it uses an API...won't get into why, it's just not an option.

thanks in advance,
#captcha or blocking #comment #recommendations #spam #wordpress

I personally use Akismet and Conditional Captcha together, but since Akismet isn't an option,
    take your pick:
    WordPress › WordPress Plugins: tag="spam"

I think the best way to block spam that you mark all comments to moderator, then you approval them after review all comments

      Hi there,

      First time poster, hello warriors!

I've used the "math comment spam protection" plugin on several WP sites before, it does a good job for protection from bots. It just adds a simple random arithmetic question as a required form field (eg what is the sum of 4+3?), which has the aim of distinguishing between humans and computers, 'turing test' style.

As someone else mentioned, the best way of preventing spam is to moderate all comments. Not always the easiest option, though!

      Hope this helps.

      Oz.

PS: Seems I can't add links as I'm a new member. Search the WP Codex for the name above, you'll see it.

      Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replys, again this is for a client so I am looking for an automatic solution that does not involve akismet, as in the OP it's not an option.

I will check out some of the suggestions, as manually monitoring them is not going to cut it for this client.

      Thanks again
      Carlo

If you are looking to protect yourself against spam comments, either use a very strong solution like reCaptcha, or design a custom one. The less similar to other captchas your solution is, the less likely an automated bot will be able to break it. Captchas like the ones used in the suggestions above are easy to break autonomously, as i demonstrated in a paper, hiding information from machine vision on the world wide web.

So yeah, either go for reCaptcha, or get your wallet out
