wierd url question ... %EF%BB%

hello warrior programmers

I have many self hosted wordpress blogs, but one I just built is doing something strange.

on my urls that point to posts, they look like

mydomain.com/%EF%BB%postname/

my permalinks are set to custom ... /%postname%/

this is so weird.

I know that this is most generally caused by excess whitespace betweeen php code blocks... but I didn't edit any files and don't know where to start to look to fix this

I am using the latest version of wp

any ideas would be helpful and appreciated

thanks in advance

Just wondering: Did you use something like Fantastico to install it?

    Also, some suggestions to try:
What happens if you go to the permalink settings, delete everything in the box, then re-type "/%postname%/"?

Do the %EF%BB% chars show up if you change the permalink settings from "Custom Structure" to "Default".

Not sure how interested you are, but it looks like this is the start of the UTF-8 Byte Order Mark, described here: Byte order mark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Try changing permalink format to default, save settings and then set permalink structure again.

      and thanks nmarley,

fyi, I did not use Fantastico to install, I uploaded and did the install using filezilla like I always do on all my blogs.

retyping did not work, the BOM came right back

the %EF%BB% chars do not show up if you change the permalink settings from "Custom Structure" to "Default".

I did notice that UTF-8 Byte Order Mark is what it seems to be, but how do I fix it?
I have not been able to find an answer for that anywhere.

      thanks for your replies

ps, when I put the mouse on the link, it shows what it should be until I click on it, then the byte order mark shows up

pps, i also Disabled all plugins, and switched to the default theme, no change.

Hmm... could be a MySQL issue. The database itself can have a default char set, which in this case could be set to something out of the ordinary, which might account for the strange behavior. I'm honestly just grasping at straws now, because it's difficult to know without having access to debug it.

All I can think of at this point is that if this continues, you could try exporting your DB and re-installing.

Oh, can you check your .htaccess file? Maybe something in the redirect stuff there is adding the %EB%FF% chars.

thanks for trying ... I didn't want to have to reinstall, but I don't see much of a choice. wish I knew what could cause this and where to look to fix it

    UPDATE:

I'm starting to think it was the "headspace2" plugin I tried on the site. Deactivating did nothing and removing it did nothing ...

BUT ... when i deleted and reposted the posts that were published while that plugin was running (which is since removed), all is normal
