Multiple Domains Directing to one Site...Bad?

I hope this is the right forum for this...never been in here before...pretty cool.

I have a friend who likes several domains for his business, but only wants to work with one website so he asked me if I thought he could redirect all those domains to the same site without penalty from Google.

I told him I didn't think that was the right definition of a redirect and may be more like a rewrite and that Google may see all those domains as duplicate content. I'm not sure if this is correct or not so I thought I would appeal to the wise, under appreciated and virtuous Programming Talk folks in the Warrior Forum.

Any clarification would be helpful.

Regards,
Dino

well maybe if you do it through google as in putting multiple of the same ads with different domains. But making it redirect through html on the site is not bad.

for example having test.org redirect the user to test.com is not bad and if you owned test.net and test.biz and you had them redirect to test.com is also not bad.

OK, but if he is using completely different domain names and redirecting all those names to one website, wold that be bad? Example:

    www.barstools.com, www.greatstools.com, www.cheapdesignerbarstools.org all redirected to ---------> www.bestbarstoolsite.com

My understanding is that this would appear as duplicate content. Not such a good idea?

Using google, Yahoo or any other advertising place and creating multiple ads then yes but just having them redirect in general than no.

Yes, you can redirect all these domains without penalty using a 301 redirect.

However, if he is using AdWords, he will need to advertise using the real site's domain (not one of the redirected domains).

OK, thanks. So can he then rank well for all those different sites, even if they redirect to one site? Or, will all the link juice he builds get passed on to the site that all the others are being directed to?

    To be brief, it's complicated.

If there's no content currently on those sites, all the link juice will go to the site that's being redirected to. None of the additional domains will show up in the search results. In this case, he'd be better off just promoting his site, and building backlinks with different anchor texts for the keywords he's trying to target.

However, if there's already content and those sites are indexed, Google will compare the content and determine intent of the redirect. If the content is too different or is completely unrelated to what it was there before, the link juice won't transfer. In some cases, even if the content differs but similar, the link juice can transfer.

@Supafly There is no advantage of buying all those other domains, except to keep competition from buying it. Tell him to save his money because Google will not index and or rank a redirected domain.
