Audiophiles? How to save mp3...

This isn't a programming issue but it's the most technical of our categories so I hope I might find an audio technician here.

If you repeatedly edit and save an mp3 file are you losing data? (in a similar way as with a jpeg image?) In other words, does it keep getting re-compressed each time?

If so, how do you work around it? I use both Audacity and WavePad. With Audacity you have to either save it as an Audacity project or keep exporting in mp3, whereas WavePad has a "Save As" function to use on any type audio file.

Is there any difference between the two functions?

    if you can, try to find a lossless quality version of the mp3 you are editing, that is try to find a FLAC, normally you should be able to rip a CD to flac files, this you can edit and convert to mp3. there will still obviously be a loss of quality since mp3 is a lossy format, but there will be less loss converting lossless to lossy, as opposed to converty lossy to lossy to lossy, etc.
