an FTP Filezilla question

Hello - ...

I've uploaded a website I have mydomain.com (an html index page) from my web editor, to Hostgator's cPanel, then by the legacy file manager.

Can I also upload the this same domain as a WP page, through WP cpanel fantastico and FTP Filezilla. Will there be any contradictory protocols occurring?

I'm considering running it on WP alone anyway, but just wondering, owing to an issue/observation I've made in the THEMES folder in FZilla when uploading a WP theme, why it's showing a folder named "twentyten" and an "index.php" file, rather than what I assume should be "classic" and "default" folders.

I'm looking through a couple of YouTube vids too, but obviously mine's a rather more pertinent question

Thanks

I'm confused by what you're asking. It doesn't matter where you upload your files from. If files sharing the same file name are uploaded, they will replace the current files on the server.

It doesn't matter where you upload your files from. The Cpanel file uploader is mainly for when you may not have an FTP program to hand (in case you were on someone elses PC for example)

The twentyten folder is the new default theme that comes with the latest Wordpress release.

Simple answer is no. Just for some clarifications

Your web editor upload uses ftp in the backend, making it transparent to you. When you use filezila, you're doing it manually. Your web editor and filezila (an open source software) uses ftp to upload to your hosting.

Fantastico is a script that help us to setup a platform. In this case you can use fantastico to setup WP first. Then you can made use of WP cpanel to upload WP themes or plugins to your wp. You can use filezila too but you must where to put those files. They all (WP cpanel, filezila, and web editor) does the same thing.

twentyten is the default wordpress theme that comes together with WP, you'll have it after you install wordpress 3.0. Inside the twentyten's index.php supercede the index.php in your "default" folder.

    hope this helps

Thanks - any idea what this message means? when I type

      http://www.mydomain.com/wp-admin/

      into my browser window...

      Fatal error:

Call to undefined function get_header() in /home/me/public_html/mydomain.com/wp-admin/index.php on line 1

I'm guessing that when I tried to upload the WP theme yesterday, I uploaded it into the wrong file?

WP can't find the header.php file in that path - possible causes WP is not setup yet or like you mentioned the theme is loaded to wrong folder.

It seems that in spite of a warning to the contrary, I CAN in fact re-load a site into WP if I remove it. I just set up a WP using an unused site I have, and was able to add it again (I did use different user & p/word).

HOWEVER - in my browser a DNS error suggests that in fact I cannot upload the site again? Is that correct, or have I missed a technicality somewhere that WILL allow my site to be live again? Thanks

Yup, that what I ended up doing - they did a re-set. Just wish I'd asked them if it was an operation I could attempt! Still, I don't expect to be making the same mistake again!
