How to edit sidebar in wp?

Hi,

I want to edit my sidebar in wp. I wish to remove the blogroll, categories, etc on my sidebar. Can this be done in my page.php file? Or the sidebar file? I already tried deleting some code but it messed things up so I need specific instructions. The same goes for my footer. It has the meta section and the About Me section in it which I don't want.

Thanks for any advice

Just navigate to the widgets section and you can change add remove those without having to edit the code.

Try moving an empty text widget into the sidebar and see if it gets rid of the Meta and Blogroll items.

Otherwise you can edit the sidebar.php file in your theme - make sure you make a backup first so you can correct any errors you might induce. Look for the section between the <ul> tags.

Thanks guys, I was able to do what I wanted - I basically removed everything on the sidebar which is what I wanted to do. Now I want to make my text extend across the page. Also I want to get rid of the date, comments, author on my page. I'm trying to get the appearance of a professional website, not a blog. Any ideas?

What you need to do is modify your theme to have a number of different templates (I'm assuming it doesn't have a number of templates already). Create a template that extends the text across the theme without any sidebars, as well as any other custom ones you need for your site.

I also go through a lot of themes and remove the comment and author/date fields to make them look less "blog-like".

      Hi Bill,

Did you say "CREATE" a template?? Didn't you know that I was template illiterate? I have been working on this theme awhile now and fixing the width is the last thing I need to do, knock on wood. I appreciate you trying to help me.

Actually you don't create templates from scratch - you simply take a file from your existing theme and modify it. No designing required, so it's even suitable for those who are "theme illiterate".
