Help with hostgator reseller

I´m not sure if this is the right forum section but I´ll just give it a try.

I would like to integrate an hostgator reseller account on my membership site. At my site I would like them to be able to but 1 domain each and be given a small amount of disc space for free (they indirectly paid me with the membership fee) so therefor my questions is: Is it possible to create an infinite amount of acounts for your customers? Could I for example give each of my customer only 10MB of disc space and then use an aluminium account to give 500 of my customers a small but free website?

How much administration is it to put up a new account? Can it be done automatically?

To put it simple I would like to know more about the hostgator reselling option :p

i have used hostgator in the past so i may be able to help answer your questions.

it sounds like you want an automated solution with hosting plans that when purchased, create the accounts inside your WHM control panel right?

i would suggest WHMCS, it is a billing script for WHM and helps automate hosting businesses.

as far as integrating with your membership site, that's a tough one. there is not much you can do there and will have to do everything by hand

as far as the MB limits and plans etc that is all possible, you just create the plans inside WHM.

Hostgator is ok for small, very small implementations of websites, but I fear you will find that any real power, will cost you, (get out your wallet), the thing is if you are going to do what you suggest, you will need, a dedicated or VPS account, something you can control, completely, as well I suspect you will need a custom scripting solution for the functionality you describe,

Might get expensive but if you have a plan and you feel like it will succeed, push forward, the only thing I would guess is that there are a lot of free hosting services already out there, what is different about the approach you suggest, that will answer the question about how you should proceed.

I'm not sure why you would need to get a VPS for something like this. Like Jason said above, get WHMCS -- you get a free license when you purchase a reseller package from HG. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's worth it.

You can use WHMCS to set up a hosting package for your members, define the limits, etc., and create a code word they need to enter so they can sign up (so non-members don't access it).

Then they go through the signup process themselves, get their own cpanel, etc. Like I say, it'll be a bit of work for you to get it set up, but once you do it's pretty much automatic. And there's good support from both WHMCS and inside the HG forums, where there are specific sections devoted to reseller accounts and WHMCS.

You should be able to have quite a few small accounts on an aluminum package, and if it does look like your resources are approaching the limit, you can upgrade to the next level.

I for one would be interested to learn how well a HG reseller account can handle 500 client accounts, I would really be interested in learning how well they could deal with that simply as a matter of professional interest, so do let us know if you do this, update us because, I would really like to know if the service level is up to this type of usage,)

I have a reseller account and I wouldn't attempt this. However, hostgator still supports your customers with tech support and all.

They just have low caps on the reseller accounts. I like the reseller account because it comes with a limited version of WHM.

Can you setup infinite accounts? No - there is a limit and that is your account limit.

Can you automate the administration of creating new accounts with your WHM - Yes! I have a script that does just that if you are interested. Note: Requires PHP skills to integrate it with your membership site.

My interest was mostly rhetorical, because there is really no such thing as unlimited in the hosting business, this is something that is advertised, but yet, no one ever really expects it to be an issue, which is one reason why I discourage the advertising of unlimited packages, because it does not exist, there is no such thing as unlimited.

So when I say I am interested to see how it works out I am really saying that I don't believe it is possible...
