Problem with Google Widget

I am trying to install this google widget into a website. However, the widget seems to be broken.

I don't see the little navigator image (just a broken image url) when I copy and paste the code into a wordpress website. Also, the google text ad that appears when the code is placed on the website has a spacing problem in the the letters are squashed in the ad. (Which I think looks junky...!)

Edited to add: I just realized that these widgets are probably not Google's own products, but things that are added by independent developers. Does anyone here design these types of widgets, and if so, what is the cost?

I may just give up trying to use this, but it looks so cute and handy on the Google demo site that I wanted to give it a try.

Any suggestions as to how to get this to work. Is it 'wonky' because I am using a Mac to view the website where I pasted the code?

This is not an urgent problem, but sometimes when I decide I want to do something I find it hard to let go until I get things to work properly, so any help would be appreciated.

(I don't need the Google API key - just the nice little search box this widget provides.)

Signing off for the night, but if any of you techie types can point me in the right direction - that would be great! Will check back tomorrow...
