Pingback Requests - What Should I Do With Them??!!

Hi Guys

Hope someone can help with this as i need to know what to do with all the pingback requests i keep getting.

I get emails all the time with them saying:

A new pingback on the post "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" is waiting for your approval.

This is an excerpt of an article i have distributed. It then gives me the option to either

Approve It:
Trash It:
Spam It:

I know that pingbacks are good, but i can not approve them as they then show up as comments for the post and as they are excerpts they do not look good.

At the moment i am trashing them but would appreciate some genius techy person to give me the lowdown on this.

All the best

Kevin

You are NOT getting 'pingback requests'... If you tajke the time to read carefully the email notification (which, btw, is set by you to be sent!) it says that you have to approve it. Or not.

What is "an excerpt"? You should learn what a pingback is...

Not a genius but I read the documentation. You should, too!

They look EXACTLY as they are supposed to look. And, according to your description, they do exactly what they are supposed to do.

Just because we don't understand certain things... it doesn't mean they are wrong

Jesus Christ almighty ..... which side of the bed did you emerge from.

I do apologise for not being on the same high plane as you but a more curteous response to my question was in order.

I would hate to be a patient of yours if you were a Doctor. You should take in to acount before replying that some people do not grasp or understand even the simplest of things straight away and need to be guided rather than patronising or demeaning them.

I guess you can not answer my question yourself so i will indeed check out the links, which i thank you for.

    All the best

ps: my reference to a genius techy person was meant to be tongue in cheek. Even if it was meant lightheartedly i guess you are not that person.

Just ignore him mate. He's cleary an arrogant idiot. What is the purpose of a forum? To ask and comment on questions? You always get some fool that doesn't understand that.

To answer your question, my understanding of a Pingback is that it is basically another website's way of telling you that they have placed a link to your site on theirs. In other words it's a backlink. If you approve it, a snippet of the page your backlink is on will then appear in your comments section with a link back to theirs.

I get loads of pingbacks everyday to my sites, but they are mainly from the articles I have bombed out,so I ignore them. What you can do though is look for a plugin called 'Pingback Power' it is free, and allows you to extract these pingbacks (or backlinks). You can then go to PingFarm.com and ping them yourself so that Google finds them and you get credit for the backlink.

Now was that so hard to answer in a polite helpful manner? No it wasn't.
Come on guys, we don't need arrogance and attitude on this forum. There are plenty of those already on the internet. This place is all about people being able to ask and learn about internet marketing.

      All the best.

        Hey TBInternetMarketing

        Thanks for that

I appreciate you taking the time

Gonna check out the plugin thanks. Most of the pingback s are from my articles so i understand that now.

        All the best

        Thanks once again

Keep up with the name-calling my friend, and you'll find yourself with a big 'BANNED' under your name.

'This place' isn't the place to ask questions that are more easily and thoroughly answered by a quick Google search.

Beyond that, the condescending attitude shown by

is not going to endear you to the people who have been around 'this place' a lot longer than you and frankly are somewhat tired of seeing the forums clogged up by posts like this.

Istvan's point was clear - read the instructions, make an effort to find the answers first. Then if you can't find the answers, ask. We're more than happy to help if it's obvious you've at least made an effort.

          Whatever you say ...

Istvans reply was condescending, arrogant and out of order.

There are more polite ways of answering a fair question in a forum that is supposed to help people who need a genuine answer to a problem.

If you feel you are beneath answering a question you feel everyone should know, then you should refrain from answering at all.

This response does not mean i condone the use of name calling in any way. But if you can not see that Istvans reply was not respectful then you are just as bad.

There are too many warriors in this forum as far as i am concerned that show little respect for people just starting out online, looking for a little help with a problem that may seem huge to them.

We all had to start somewhere and learn and as i stated before if you have nothing helpful to say then you should say nothing at all.

          Sincerely and respectfully

            Agreed
            and out of order.
            not so much

Granted. And I would never answer a question quite in that manner. I will, however, - and have - answered a question by telling the person who asked it that they should have expended a little time and effort, and a simple Google search, to find the answer themselves.

If you feel you are beneath answering a question you feel everyone should know, then you should refrain from answering at all.
You didn't ask a question that I thought you should know the answer to. You asked a question that #1, doesn't belong in this particular forum - the Programming Talk forum, and #2, you asked a question that had you spent a little bit of effort trying to find the answer to, you wouldn't have asked in the first place.

And no - I'm not going to 'refrain from answering at all'. This forum, and the others under the umbrella of the Warrior Forum as a whole, are filled with questions that have been asked and answered already.

This response does not mean i condone the use of name calling in any way. But if you can not see that Istvans reply was not respectful then you are just as bad.
I didn't say - anywhere - that I didn't see how his response was not respectful. On the other hand, there are many 'old hands' that are exasperated by people coming here asking questions that have already been answered.

There are too many warriors in this forum as far as i am concerned that show little respect for people just starting out online, looking for a little help with a problem that may seem huge to them.
You might do well to examine the underlying reason why some people here 'show little respect'. The teacher whose time, knowledge and expertise is wasted by the student might tend to answer those questions a little curtly.

We all had to start somewhere and learn and as i stated before if you have nothing helpful to say then you should say nothing at all.
Oh, but I *am* saying something helpful. I'm telling you that in the time that it took you to type out your question and its examples, you could have found the answer 20 times over by doing a simple Google search: what is a pingback - Google Search

And you would have shown that you respect the time and knowledge level of people that come here to answer questions that may not have such easy answers.

You have to be really careful, most of these you will get are NOT Pingbacks or trackbacks, they are false comments designed to look like pingbacks, if you follow the link back you will not see the trackback at all.

Its usually a trick to have you accept it to "return the favor" but it's only in their favor.

Sometimes as well, you will follow the link and get malware. So be careful and check the security status of the site first.

i get pingback requests all the time so i'm glad i found this thread in the search tab of the WF. it is too easy to get banned around here. i am in the side of the OP and the gentleman who came to his defense. i don't think the response was warranted. people like myself who don't understand this material, sure we could do a google search for it, but i find myself learning better when someone explains a process to me and than just some random google page i find that i cannot interact with.

Just my opinion, but why defend negative responses. I know this guy has been around a lot longer than us but he still should either ignore the question if it is below him (as it clearly was), or aswer it in a more respectful manner.

Good for you! And I'm not being sarcastic, either. That's what the search feature is for.

Dunno about that - you have to step pretty far away from the line to get banned.

That's understandable - and there's nothing wrong with saying, "Listen, I searched for this stuff but I can't really make heads or tails of what I found." If you show that you at least made an effort to learn about something before you impose on someone else's time, you'll gain a lot of respect.

I can't answer for Istvan of course, but it's not that the answer is below anyone here. The point is that there's a lot more information available throughout the internets on ping- and trackbacks than one could ever hope to find on the WF, and it's painfully obvious that the OPer didn't do any research at all before starting a thread with a question that's been answered numerous times already.
