How much would it cost???

I just had an amazing idea for a social networking site! This would be a huge project but the problem is I have no idea how much programing costs these days... Could someone give an idea what I would be looking at or how big of an angel investor/partner I need to find? If I want to have a site functioning similar to facebook? From the programing point only. I know I would have to spend a lot of money on the design part too because it would be sooooo awesome! But I would need people to be able to have there profile page and also be able to socialize on the site and theres much more into it... maybe you can catch me on skype or pm me with your info. I can not pm yet so I will see you here or out there If anyone would be interested to partner up let me know too so we can talk more

There are actually quite a few social network platforms your can buy the source code to and use to setup your own network. I can't remember the name of the one that was being promoted only ayear or so ago. These guys had built a platform that did everything you would want a social network to do. You could then host your own social network using their source code and even modify things that you wanted to work differently.

I am sure you will find some options if you search something like 'social network platform' or something similar in Google. It's worth having a look at that option first before you go and reinvent the wheel at a huge cost to yourself.

    No need to purchase anything...

There is actually a way to turn WordPress into a social network.. see BuddyPress.org | Home

Also, if you are looking for something even more robust, you should check out ELGG -http://www.elgg.org/ which bills itself as "a powerful open source
    social networking engine".

Depending on your skills and the complexity of your project, you may need to find a expert in either of those options and pay them to do the configuration and any custom work you need.

For something really big I guess you need a full time programmer. No point in developing something BIG if you don't have a guy around to keep it safe and working 24/7.

A large budget for 1-3 years is the best way to keep it pumping. Maybe a partnership with a investor that could profit from the site is a good way to start.

If you want to build something that scales, there's no way you should be using wordpress/buddypress. You need to get something that's not built on top of a blogging engine, then modify it to meet your needs. Or, do it totally custom. Personally I'd do it custom, but that's just me.

If you're thinking to make your social networking site work similar to Facebook then you've to invest good amount for 1/2 programmers who are quite proficient in taking care of your site 24/7 working schedule basis. For hosting purpose there is also an investment. Also it's very important to invest for graphic designers and marketing person. Obviously it's recommended to find out a good investor who can also make profit with the site. You don't need to scared about it, initially you have to spend money a big but if you can successfully implement all the things surely you'll get more big return!

Wish you all the very best!
