Linking to site slowing down my site

So I just switched from bluehost shared to a VPS. Which is wonderful in all cases except for one.

I use various software programs including Article Marketing Robot to link to my site which is a wordpress blog.

When I use article marketing robot, my site that i am linking to comes to a complete sluggish stall.

When I looked at the stats, everytime i do a run with article marketing robot my VPS memory is getting hit. I assume this is from the auto approve directories linking to my site.

I turned off trackbacks and pinging, and no change atall.

My question is , what is happening when those article directories are linking to my site causing my site to slow down?

Is there anything I can do on my blog so that this doesn't happen? Or do I just need to load up with more memory on my VPS.

Thanks!

Hi Jamie - assuming that you were doing everything the same before you switched hosts, then the first thing that seems to pop up to the top of the list is that maybe your VPS isn't quite as powerful as your old shared host?

If I understand what your 'robot' does, when you hit 'Go', it publishes a bunch of articles to various article directories and in turn those directories are probably doing a crawl and checking the links in the articles. Could just be that all of those checks hitting the server at once is pushing your VPS too far.

Have you checked your access logs to verify that you're getting a surge in traffic (any kind) at the time you submit using your robot?

At any rate, this should be a warning sign that your server is not up to snuff to handle what is being sent to it (or may be in the future).

    HTH!

When I switched a site from shared hosting to a VPS, I scrimped a bit of the specs. Now rather than sharing a database and web server instance, you have to have your own, and that takes boat loads of ram.

One way to reduce the number of components in the page is to simplify the page's design. But is there a way to build pages with richer content while also achieving fast response times? Here are some techniques for reducing the number of HTTP requests, while still supporting rich page designs.

  • check this out. you will need firefox, and firebug to go along with this, but is a great tool for seeing why a site loads slowly ...

If you are giving more links to site then your site is slow down. I think you are opening more than links at a time.
