Every month I get a "509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" Error

About once per month, I get an error when I try to go to my site.

Here is a copy of the error:

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.
Apache mod_fcgid/2.3.6 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at coveragediscounts.com Port 80

I purchased the website in November on WarriorForum (HERE) from wordpressdoctor, and he included free CPanel hosting with it. When the error happened last month, I emailed wordpressdoctor's Support person who contaced with hostgator, but still couldn't figure out why my site keeps exceeding the bandwidth every month.

I don't even send traffic to the site or actively promote it yet, so I am not sure what is going on.

Does anyone have any ideas for me to fix the problem?

Maybe you should consider moving to a new host. Generally speaking, getting free hosting sounds great, but in reality there is always a price.

The reason you're getting that message is because he has a set limit on your hosting account, since you said the site gets very little traffic then it's probably a very small limit. I'd suggest moving to a new host, it doesn't take much to move a site.

  • This is most likely due to leaches sucking down bandwidth by using images directly off your site. Send me a pm with your email, and I can assist you in tracking down the bandwidth consumption.

    @Cash Money Hosting

Unfortunately, I don't think that Gene will be able to send you a PM since he does not yet have 50 posts.

What might be a good idea, is going to a hosting review site such as, hostingz(dot)com (I am in no way affiliated with this site), and finding a new, yet inexpensive, hosting plan.

As Brian mentioned, I wasn't able to send any PMs yet.

I actually have a godaddy hosting account that I already use with my other websites. I considered moving this site over, but have concerns about "contaminating" my other sites if someone did hack this one.

I first got the error in December, so I searched google and found instructions to go into CPanel and to turn off hot-linking. I did that but I have still received the same error every month this year.

    Any suggestions?

  • open awstats. that will show you where your bandwidth is going.

I finally got my site moved to hostgator (thanks to WPTwin which made it painless). After 9 days, the site had used all 10 MB of my bandwidth again.

I used Jing to screen capture the stats from awstats: 2011-05-22_1414 - AllBrightHomes.com's library

I am not sure what I am looking for, but I think the report is saying that in 9 days my home page was viewed 8,481 times and each time it loaded it took up 1.32 MB? If I understand correctly, then that alone could be most of my 10 GB bandwidth problem.

The site I purchased had a big picture on the home page, could that be the cause of this?

      I appreciate any help.

I got the same error when I tried to access the wordpress admin area. I guess I'll have to wait until my bandwidth resets.

What I don't understand is how a site that I don't send traffic to could possibly exceed the bandwidth limits.

I considered moving this site to my Godaddy hosting, but I don't want to exceed the bandwidth limits on that hosting either, since I use the Godaddy hosting for my other sites that I actually do send traffic to.

Godaddy is what my other sites are hosted with. This site I purchased on warriorforum and it came with hosting.

GoDaddy is awful for hosting email and not quite as bad for webhosting, but still far from good.

There are a ton of low cost (under $10/mo) hosting providers that include nearly unlimited web bandwidth...and they even have support.

The reason you're getting that even at the cPanel login page is because your hosting provider is a reseller for another company and they hit their monthly bandwidth allocation. When that happens, cPanel and everything else gets suspended for all accounts of the reseller.

      Thanks, I'll look into it.

Have the people providing the hosting send a support ticket to Hostgator concerning the problem. In my experience you seem to get more senior personnel with the tickets than with chat or telephone support.

Move the site to your godaddy hosting. At least that way you're in control. And if there's a real problem you can take it up with godaddy and get things sorted out.

Yes what you are seeing is correct. 8400 page views @ 1.3MB/view = about 10GB of transfer.

That's a lot of data transfer for a single day.

You might want to consider upgrading a VPS hosting plan that gives you about 500GB of transfer each month for what you are consuming.

The problem is Bandwidth. Free Hosting sounds good for beginner, but for u to run a business, use pay hosting with unmetered bandwidth + disk space such as hostmonster or hostgator.
