Need direction on where to find programmer, and what to use

Greetings, glad to have finally joined the Warrior Forum.

We have an e-commerce site currently (on the highwire platform) and I do the SEO and all our marketing and we are ranking well and gaining traction every day in all the search engines. The problem, I am realizing, is the functionality of the site. It is terrible, really.

I want my site to function with the ease and simplicity of something like the "Shop Nasty Gal" website as an example (which it is not allowing me to link to, Newbie! It's nothing bad, just clothing) and many sites we like that are similar. This is just an example, but the design is similar to what we have and will continue to need.

SO... my question is- do we do open source for this type of website, or can this be accomplished with another e-commerce platform like Volusion? Can an e-commerce site like V. even accomplish this clean and fast site?

Also, I know nothing of how to list our products from an open source program, since we list now from inkfrog and upload into Highwire. Also, don't know how to get the existing products over if we were to go open source. We have a quote coming in soon from a wordpress e-commerce builder, including design and programming (though we are fairly happy with our current design).

How much could I reasonably expect to pay for a full site to be done in open source? I have learned how to do some tweaks with redirects and this and that but I don't have much skill.
Any info or opinion is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
M

I think you have a few misconceptions there.

First of all: Do you want to get your own script programmed and released as open source? Do you want to have it programmed using an open source language like PHP? Or do you want to have an open source solution customized for your needs?

You are using the term open source very ambiguously.

I took a quick look at the Shop Nasty Gal (at least what came up first in Google) and it looks very similar to what I have seen using Magento.

There is a free version available and it is very powerful already. You can invest a few hundred dollars to get your own theme and some training.

Thanks Tashi! I don't know the answer to the first 3 questions you posed, so I guess that's why my OP is so ambiguous.

I will check out Magento, I heard there is a big learning curve for non-programmers. I guess I can spend my days learning instead of marketing for a while, our company will have to decide how my efforts will be spent best.

I wonder how long training would take...I think I would rather hire someone to make a site like this on Magento and then show me how to do basic updates.

      Thanks again!
