Looking to build a directory can anyone put me on the right path of how to do this. Do i need to download software if so any ideas where I can get it from

I usually start my search at Hotscripts.

PHP Script & Programs Directory Upload File | Search & Download Software Free

They will have a mix of free and paid software.

  A very good one that has been around for a long time is esyndicat (do a google search). You can start out with the Free version and upgrade later on should you wish.

A lot of people use PHP Link Directory (phpLD) because it's template driven and easily customizable.
