What would be the best route to take if I want to build a website where users can create accounts and upload files to be shared and purchase within the website. What would be better, using a server computer I purchased or using an online server hosting site. What's more cost efficient and how much am I looking at altogether or perhaps monthly? all at once is preferred.

Renting a server from some webhosting provider will be easier as you wont have to worry about upkeep and lot of other issues. Bandwidth can be one issue when you host the server at your own place. I have no idea of the cost factor.

You should def. go and rent urself a dedicated server (instead of purchasing the physical computer and set it up in your home).

The cost will depend on the traffic you get. They can vary from 40usd/month to 500usd/month. Since your site is new, it wont have huge traffic and therefor i´d say that you will be fine with about 50-100 usd/month. Additionally, sometimes a one-time setup fee is needed (but that depends on the hosting company).

For a list of hosting companies you might want to check out Dedicated Server Hosting - Best Dedicated Servers Rating & Reviews (note: links on this site are affiliate links, but not mine).

I would recommend going with an online option for the server. As when you add the cost of keeping the server computer running 24/7 (power, extra internet if not on business plan already, etc) it always totals way more than the monthly rental of an online server which comes with all of that plus in most cases a 24/7 staff there at the NOC ready to help you keep your server running at all times.

Terry is right. You can replace "dedicated server" with "vps" in my post above. I was thinking about virtual private server while writing, but somehow wrote about dedicated servers anyways

VPS is def. the way you should go and once you experience huge traffic (meaning that you will have loads of data stored on your server and this can become expensive with a VPS) you can still think of renting a dedictated server.

Terry can you talk more about this, as I am very interested in doing this with my 2 current hybrid VPS plans.
