PHP 5.3.6 just killed my site. Help!

Hi

So I woke up this morning, went to check my site as you do and what did I find ... a blank page. I couldn't even access my admin page as that too pulled up a blank page.

The site is still indexed, none of the ranking has dropped off, so I contacted my host who said they made the switch to the new PHP version last night.

They seemed to think that one of the plugins or the them I am using is the cause of an incompatibility issue. They've kindly reverted my site back to the previous version of PHP so I can test my plugins/theme.

My question is, with me being a complete newbie, how on earth do I check whether the plugins/theme I'm using are compatible with PHP 5.3.6. I have a sneaky feeling that the incompatibility is something to do with one of the menu plugins I'm using which is based on Superfish.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
M

    hey there

if the creators of the plugins offer support, ask them about any issues upgrading to v 5.3.6

also, try asking your hosting company to review the website error logs while you are using 5.3.6. in most cases, php will generate errors in the logs which may offer some help in determining what is breaking.

      Hi Patrick

Thanks for the reply! Thing is not all of my plugins are supported But I'll try going back to my host again to see if they spotted some errors.

      Cheers!

Sometimes this can be a caching issue ... One thing you can try is to download all your plugins (so you can upload them again), then erase them in the plugins directory.

If the site works, add them back one by one.

Another thing to try is to download the wordpress on it's own and upload it over the current directory.

I could be wrong, but I think the reason why your rankings has not yet dropped is that Google still has the "undamaged" version of your site.

Nonetheless, once they cache get to cache the blank pages. There is a good chance that your rankings will drop. Again, I could be wrong.

If the reason for your site's malfunction is indeed the plugins, then IM Godfather's advice should fix your site.

Thanks IM G, I'll give that a go and see what happens. My host did say it coould either be the plugins or the theme. I've upgraded the theme but didn't have a foggy about how to go about the plugins ... but now I do So thank you.

Dom - for now my host has reverted my site back to the previous PHP version whilst I figured out what to do, hopefully Google would have missed the glich in my site but we'll see.

I'm going to get my host to do the PHP upgrade again and see if this plugin thing will work. If not I'll download a fresh install of WP as IM G said. Fingers crossed!

        Cheers

Quick update - the offending plugin was wp automatic upgrade, which unfortunately I've had to deactive to get my site to work (hopefully, there will be an update for this plugin soon).

There was also some issue with the stats counter plugin but I wasn't too fussed at deactivating that. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else comes across this issue.

Looks like this plugin has had this problem for a while. That post was dated January 2010. In it he says that he renamed the plugin folder through the hosting admin panel and that allowed him to access the site again.
