Hello
I use Thesis 1.8, W3 Total Cache plugin, optimized images with no flash, no posts on home page etc., hosted on hostgator yet my site accidentinsuranceforfree dot com takes more than 8 seconds to load.
I tried using Pingdom's analysis (but it shows only 10 images out of 15) and skips some sections so cannot rely on it. I tried other sites too but each result says a different story and difficult to comprehend how to go troubleshoot.
Can anyone of you guide me how should I analyze my site? I would be grateful. Thanks.

Yes, it is shared. Baby croc, as they name it.

open your footer.php that belongs to your theme and insert this code just before </body>

    <?php echo get_num_queries(); ?> queries in <?php timer_stop(1); ?>

It will tell you the time of query execution. I think your problem may be there and associated with shared hosting.
Remove the code after your investigation.

I put it and refreshed but see nothing except "queries in".

Then it might be something to do with your caching system.
I don't cache so am unsure.
Does your site load slower without it?

Actually, I liked the idea of combining the css and js files and moreover the W3TC plugin inherently supports combining files as well as a CDN, hence used it. I thought about WP Super Cache but it compulsorily uses Smush.it (my optimized images get blurred with additional 2% compression) and hence I avoided.
I know caching helps 2nd visit, not the first and hence am worried.

In my case the culprit was W3Total Cache Plgin I removed from all my 100+ site and they load better now.

I am also using W3 Total Cache with CloudFlare active. I have been extremely happy with the results.

From your WP Dashboard, try clicking on the "View All results" button on the W3TC Google Page Speed Analysis window that is displayed. If you're not seeing this, go to the plugin settings page under Miscellaneous and make sure the box is checked that says "Enable Google Page Speed dashboard widget".

When you click on the "View All Results" button, it will give you a list of the issues with your site that are causing it to be so slow.

True. And I would probably recommend checking results from several different reporting resources before jumping to any definitive conclusions...all of them return different results.

HostGator tends to run WordPress sites pretty well. You should g_zip compress your site and that would be a quick fix to speed it up.
