PROGRAMMING

Case =customer starts WordPress blog with poor domain name
Goal= Rename the blog on a domain that will be better for SEO
steps
1 Copy all folders from old domain to folder for new domain
2 Add the new domain in add on domains in Cpanel
3 Add rel tags to new domain pages
4 Wildcard re-direct old domain to new
5 Reset somethings in WordPress dashboard for new domain? What?
6 Anything else I've forgotten?

You forgot about the MySQL Database.

You'll need to export it and then use a good text editor to do a "find and replace" on the domain name, changing every instance of the old one to the new one.

The save the .sql file and create a new database for the new domain, and import the data from the new file. Set your wp-config file to point to the new database.

If you're staying on the same host (and it sounds like you are) then you can avoid making a new database and redoing the wp-config file. Just empty the old database after you are done and then import the edited .sql file.

  I understand about doing a mass find and replace in the data base, but why do I need to export the data base. Doesn't it already live in the folder I am copying or renaming?
