HostGator/WordPress default restore?

6 replies
Newbie here so please speak slowly & give me the "for dummies" help directions.

I have a HostGator account- I don't know if that matters or not.

Through cPanel using Fantastico De Luxe I installed WordPress, then a few plugins, then tried to enable "multi-site", then another plugin, then a theme.... you get the idea.

Well, on the left navigation bar some of the stuff stopped "working". Like the "plug in" button stopped showing "install new plug in". The "Dashboard" tab didn't show a way to get to the other sites. Assorted other things started going wrong too. I had been doing really good about following some tutorial videos and then thought "I've got this!" so went off on my own and really have a tangled mess.

What I'd like to do at this point is get it all back to an empty domain with nothing on it. The original default files with nothing else so I can start all over again. (it's a learning process, right?):rolleyes:

How do I do that?

Thanks!!

    If I understand what you are looking to do correctly. Which is to get rid of your current WP install and start over with a fresh WordPress installation.

    1. Go back into Fantastico
    2. Click on Wordpress on the left side.
    3. Look under "Current installations", find your site and click Remove.

    This will get rid of all the WP files and the database.

    Then you can do a fresh installation of WP.

      Ok, I've done that and I thought I got rid of the plugins too, but when I go back to cPanel and look at the file manager there's two locations that have a full page of files. I want to get rid of all of them but I don't know what the default (come with the site) files are so I know to keep those.

      It's like getting a hair cut and just leaving a few straggling hairs behind... make sense?

      I want the site back to it's "brand new out of the box" point before anything was added to it.

      (I at least FINALLY figured out how to get rid of Trendy Site Builder- that was a nightmare! It only took me 3 days to figure out how to get rid of that. :rolleyes: )

      Thanks for your help!

    Ok, I think I have figured out that I want to get the site back to the original HostGator default settings. Right? So it's like a brand new site and I've just logged in for the first time.

    Yes, that's it. Anyone know how to do that? Or is it even possible to do that?
    Thanks!

    Fire up your FTP (or go to the File Manager in cPanel), go to the public_html folder and delete everything that's in it.

    That will get you right back to square one and you can start again.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

    Thanks! I find it amusing that all you "ole' pros" around here forget that us WF newbies can't PM. We can't even reply to a PM unless it's a mod.

    Ok, so I went into that file and deleted the one thing that was there.

    The following list is all under the home/domain folder

    In the etc. ->domain name folder there's: passwd/ passwd,v/ quota/ quota,v/shadow/ shadow,v

    In the home/domain folder there's: access logs/etc/logs/mail/public_ftp/public_html/tmp/www

    In the mail -> new folder there's: a very long list of what appears to be text documents that start with a long string of numbers and are spaced evenly time wise. ie. 3pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm etc. (is that the cron thing?? What does that do anyway??)

    In the tmp->awstats folder there's: awstats/awstats072011/awstats082011 The last two have an icon beside them that look like a page with a red T on it.

    In the tmp ->cpbandwith folder there's: domain.com-bytes_log

    In the tmp ->webalizer folder there's: a very long list of things- too many to list that include: ctry_usage/daily_usage/dns_cache/index.html/usage.png/webalizer.current and it goes on.....

    I hope all of this makes some sence to one of you because I'm completely lost. I can be emailed at myprosperityprinciple at yahoo dot com if you don't want to continue help here. But PLEASE put Warrior Forum in the subject line so I don't accidently toss you out with the spam.
