OpenOffice Document Help Needed

I realize this is a programming sub-forum, but the OOo folks aren't nearly as fast at responding as folks here, and I'm under the gun for time.

My problem is that I am formatting a document that will be physically printed, and the publication date arrives very soon. At least according to my website.

I am using what OOo calls "styles" to format the document. They're actually very handy, but I am having a problem with custom "Page Styles. They are not retaining the names I assign to them when they are created, and the replacement names that OOo assigns just don't make any sens.

I assign style names like "Title Page," "Copyright Page," or "Preface Page," and when I re-open the document after going to bed, or lunch, whichever it happens to be, the page styles are all renamed to "Convert 1," "Convert 2" or "Convert 3," etc. Names that are meaningless to me. If I figure out which is which, I can't even rename them. It just makes a copy, and the next morning I have "Convert 4," "Convert 5," etc.

I followed all the steps I was told and created a custom template, which I used to create the document. The custom template has the page names in it when it opens a document, but the document loses the style names when it is closed and re-opened.

Does anyone have a solution for this.

And no, I don't want to buy MSWord. My licensed version would not reinstall on Windows 7 when I was forced (by a lightning strike) to upgrade my machines. If Billy Boy isn't going to keep my license operable, without a extorting a fee, I'll stick with OOo.

So, after that little snippy bit, does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this pain in the gazitchka while still maintaining my OOo documents.

    found this on the interweb...

The style should be still there in the document you previously saved. If you want a set of styles and other customizations with every new default document, save your changed file as template (File>Templates>Save...). Then call File>Templates>Organize... [Command>] Set default
You can define one default template for each component Writer, Calc, Draw and Impress. In the organizer you can also move (drag&drop) and copy (drag&Ctrl+Drop) styles across templates and loaded documents.

Sorry for not closing the thread.

It turned out that I had to save the document as an ODF (.odt) file in order for the new style names to be retained. I had previously been saving all my documents as Word Docs (.doc) merely for simplicity ... and because I didn't know anything about the other filetypes. Saving the file as an .odt type put it in the native OOo mode and save the names.

Interesting thin when I was saving in .doc was that the custom paragraph styles names were being retained, while the custom pages style names were the ones converted to "Convert 1," "Convert 2," etc.
