Online Backup Service

I tried Easiest Online Backup Service - Backblaze before, and I liked it very much. If you don't have too much data to backup, it's a great solution. It supports encryption of your data with a local password that gets never transmitted to their server, so your data is really secure. (Don't forget your password, though, or they can't help you, of course)

I just quit using it, since it couldn't handle my 4 tb (TeraBytes) of data, so I now just do local backups. That was not their fault, though, it just takes forever to backup such amounts of data over the Internet. Never had any problems restoring the part of my data that was backed up, though.

Second vote for Backblaze. In addition to providing an awesome service, they are an awesome company. Check out their blog sometime for some cool information about how they deal with all that data.

As Tashi said, if you have lots of data, web backups are going to be a problem. If you can get away with doing local backups on external media, I would recommend that instead.

I use Carbonite - its something like $59 a year. My laptop motherboard died and thankfully I had my online backup and I restored on my new laptop with no problem!

You can try Backblaze. I haven't tried it personal but reviews say they are good. It is worth giving a try.

We are using StoreGrid Vembu Pro an online backup service which is more reliable since their servers are hosted in Amazon infra structures. The client console is more intuitive, user friendly and supports different types of plugin backups. Their service and support are also best. Hence I would recommend Vembu Pro. I and all of my friends are using CrashPlan. It only costs money if you want to backup into their datacenter. If you have friends with CrashPlan you can back up to each other automatically. It really is set and forget. It compresses, encrypts and also deduplicates, meaning if you have the same file 10 times on your computer, it is only backuped once.

It is only for backing up data though. I don't think you can restore a complete OS from their backups.

I recommend Backblaze too! Love the easy of use.

There's also Mozy, which is pretty similar.

IDrive is great. They have a basic plan which is free with 5gb storage space.

I have used Carbonite and Backblaze. Backblaze is the clear winner of the two, and the $50/year is a great price. They have just increased the file sizes they support and they backup external hard drives attached to your computer.

For my wordpress sites I use a combination of Amazon S3 and the automatic wordpress backup plugin. It backups every night and keeps weekly backups going back a month. Of course that's all configurable. Here's a tutorial I made about that:

Worth thinking about: What's your upload speed on your internet connection? Mine would never be able to keep up with all the data I generate. A NAS on my local network is the only option.

From this discussion, some back up only on site and have no automatic off site backup in place. That is risky. There are two common causes of the loss of both the originals and the backups when done that way - complete fire and complete theft. Although some might say that they get an external drive off site by taking them off site, reality has proven that very few do so regularly and very few do so in the only safe method, a three drive(s)/devices rotation. Why three for off site? Because to switch two, two must be on site for the swap. If the complete fire or complete theft takes place while both are on site, the original and both backups are gone. Only if a third is still off site (and rotated in to keep all three up to date) will a backup be available for recovery. An automated remote backup service is much more regular, saves time, most often saves money, and is overall a more reliable solution. The argument that 4TB or so is too much does not apply to a remote backup service that offers “seed load” services (use of external drives vs. the Internet for the first base backup) with incremental backup thereafter.

They offer a seed load service for bigger volumes and they also have a WordPress backup service offering. Few if any remote backup companies offer a web site backup service. Most ignore our needs for web site backup, which means a two-part solution. This is one company that meet all the needs – off site, automatic, seed load for large amounts, and WordPress backup as well. But don’t just use that company. Why? Professional computer consultants recommend having at least two types of backup, not just one type. They recommend having both an on site solution and an off site solution. That combination gives a company (yours) the assurance of continuity of service and of revenue. It gives the owner(s) the peace of mind of the continuity of personal income.

How come nobody has mentioned Dropbox? I use it and also Ubuntu one, I am and feel very safe indeed.

Agreed, two very good options, and both have free/premium features and are cross-platform (Ubuntu One is now available for Windows too). I'm on Ubuntu too, and Ubuntu One is a very good solution.

If you're on Ubuntu, you can also easily backup to Amazon S3 via the Deja Dup Backup Tool.
