$150 to update Wordpress?

My online store is run via Wordpress with Cart66 shopping cart & Gravity forms. I had a programmer do some custom work on it. Wordpress is out of date and so are cart66 and gravity forms.

He says to update it all it will cost $150 due to the custom modifications.

Trying to rip me off or could it really be that much work just to update?

It depends on the plugins. If the plugins themselves do not have any updates and he has to make them himself, then yes. Also, you have custom modifications! $150 is considered rather cheap.

Yes, the plugins have updates. I suppose $150 could be cheap but steep if you have to pay $150 to update the code every so many months.

I guess that is the price of custom mods!

If the updates are needed due to lazy coding whilst customising the theme, then it's steep. On the other hand, if it includes full testing and certification, it's not bad.

If it takes the guy 8 hours or more to do it, then it's a fair deal.

7 Hours or less, and you are paying over $20 per hour!

Whether this is a bargain or not depends on what part of the world you live in. I usually charge over $50 an hour for programming work and am not lacking things to do.

Agreed! LOL well definitely a bargain for anyone in the US dollar based economy, now for someone in India to upgrade my wordpress site, I wouldn't pay more than $5 an hour! LOL

It depend exactly on the task it self. Updating plugins in wordpress is only needs one click, but if there is theme modification, so it is worth.

Sometimes it's a headache to update old plugins because you may lost some data or some of them won't work well with other plugins or with the latest version of WordPress, so I guess that's the reason he wants to charge $150.
