Installing Large Scripts? Here's a quick tip

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share this quick tip with Warriors here. I hope you will find it useful.

If you're going to install large scripts that come in a zip file and contain a lot of files (such as Butterfly Marketing or WordPress or MemberSpeed/CMSI), instead of unzipping them on your hard drive and uploading it, upload the zip file itself to your server. Then, unzip the zip file on your server using the built-in 'Extract' feature of your control panel.

This is much quicker than uploading each file separately and works great on slower connections.

cPanel has this feature built in, although I'm not too sure about other software used by hosts. Once the file is extracted, you can move the files anywhere on your server without much hassle.

Hope this helps

    Sagar,

Whilst I agree, this method is a lot quicker you do have to be careful especially with some of the scripts you have mentioned as their folder structure is not quite right when unzipped straight from the main package.

I always unzip first to make sure that this is not going to happen and then rezip the file ready for ftp and unzapping.

Pavon: No problem at all. Glad to be of help.

Janet: That's true. I've even seen some scripts that need ME to create the directory structure on my server and then upload different files into different folders manually. It's a good idea to check beforehand. Thankfully, most popular scripts that we internet marketers use (like BFM and MemberSpeed) have no such problems.

This method can also work if you're installing a huge website (that has a lot of images or page or both). Just zip up the whole website into a single zip file and upload it
