applications mysteriously keep opening and closing

Guys please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section but I have a serious problem with my laptop. If I have several applications, then without warning, they open and close, flicking from one application to the next...and the same happens to the tabs open in Google chrome - they actually switch places...

a few days ago, Chrome went 'mental' and it was like someone had taken over my computer - tabs opening and closing, moving around and I spent an hour on a powerpoint presentation and lost the whole damn thing...

I have AVG security software, cleaned up my C drive, have IObit malware cleaner and Advanced system care....tried running each and every single one and today it happened again.

Only been happening last two weeks - anyone got any ideas? Im worried that I'll lose work...

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks
Arfa

Try reinstalling windoze. It'll save all your old stuff in Windows.old ... that is if you're running something newer than XP

Or you could always reinstall the OS to a new partition, and access your old files like they were on another drive.

"Anti-virus" software is always a bad strategy
      Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I'm using Windows Vista and unfortunately I haven't a clue when it comes to technical stuff

Sounds like a virus. I've found out the hard way in the past that you can have the best paid AV software there is, and still get a virus. So a few years ago I switched up my strategy and now just rotate between a handful of the top free ones. Haven't had a problem yet.

If I were you, first thing I would do is run Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. There's not much that can hide from those two.

It's also possible that it's not a virus, but that your system just got screwed up somehow (unlikely though). Programs like CCleaner might help in that case.

Another thing you could try is to do a system restore to a few weeks ago before all of that started happening. Would be a lot less extreme than re-installing your OS. If it's a virus that's the culprit, that may or may not help. But it's probably worth a shot.

If you do have a virus or multiple viruses you should back up your files and completely wipe out and format your hard drive, reinstall Windows and start over fresh.

That sounds drastic, but honestly, once you've been infected you never quite get rid of everything and your computer is never quite the same once it has been compromised. The only way to be sure you are clean is to wipe it out.
