Accessing Webmail via cPanel

Hi Folks,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum on this one, but it's a technical issue so seems like the best fit.

I have a reseller account and the server had to have its operating system reinstalled this past week. It was a bit of a nightmare and took several days to get back to normal.

The email was messed up for a couple of days as incoming email to the domain addresses was resulting in a failure message being sent to the sender, even though the email was being delivered. That's all working properly, but I have one concern left concerning webmail.

I am able to access the mailboxes from inside cPanel by clicking on "Webmail" but I am not being asked for any passwords for mailboxes. It takes about three clicks and I get access to the mailboxes. That doesn't seem right to me, as I'm sure in the past I've been prompted for mailbox passwords.

I've have a support ticket on the go, but the tech people don't seem to think there is a problem.

I'm now starting to doubt myself, so I'm wondering if other people are able to access their mailboxes from inside cPanel without inputting passwords.

Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Myles

Yes, you can access them when logged in via cPanel, as that user..not as root.

So just to clarify, - you can access the mailboxes without any passwords once logged into cPanel?

With the cPanel user account. If you create an account for John, and log in to cPanel as John, then you can access the mailboxes you created. If you're logged in to WHM, and list accounts, cPanel that way, I'm pretty sure you can't access them.

O.K. thanks. It just felt strange, because I know I've had to enter passwords for mailboxes in the past.

Sure no problem. I have a small hosting company, and when I have to log in to a client's cPanel, I go in through WHM so there's no password exchanges, but troubleshooting email that way I have had to have them provide a password and then reset it.

If you click on "Webmail" inside cPanel, you'll be able to see all the email accounts without a password. If you click "Email Accounts" > "More" > "Access Webmail" for a particular account, you'll be prompted for a password.

Thanks. That must be what I've done in the past. I knew I had definitely been prompted for passwords when inside control panel! I wish my host support had been able to explain it that way! They're normally very good, but on this issue we were going around in circles.

hmm. Weird, that's something they should have been able to tell you very easily. A web host should either be able to give you an explanation of how everything they're providing you with works, just my opinion..
