How will I know what technology was used to build my website?

Will the technology on which my website is built determines the quality of the site? If so, which is the best technology to build an e-commerce website?

Depends of the size of your store, your budget, your expertise, etc...

You can use an ecommerce theme for wordpress, you can use Magento, etc.

Getting a good e-commerce site is a bit different than doing a blog, so the standard options like WordPress aren't the best route. There are a few specialize services, though, that offer something comparable for e-commerce.

You could search around for more, but the only one I've had experience with was Shopify. It was excellent. I've also heard good things about Zen Cart, but haven't used it myself.

Good luck! I've dabbled in e-commerce. It can be tough, and you've got to keep lean and mean, with low margins, but it's rewarding if you can make it.

It depends mostly on performance. For example, PHP is fast compared with ASP (my own experience) so if your application requires high perfomance your application needs to be constructed with a fast technology on a fast server. In my experience PHP is the best and most supported on fast reliable servers that runs UNIX and Linux systems which are better than Windows systems.

depends on how much traffic and data you are going to need to maintain, and how simple you want to make things for yourself in the future..

I would recommend asp.net if this is going to become an enterprise grade website, its alot better structured to handle these types of requirements...

im also going to disagree with the poster above that php is faster than asp this time round, there are times when php will out perform asp but in this case if you were to build the site using asp you'll have access to mutli level ntier architectures and mef interfaces which if built and hosted correctly will out perform any other language hands down when it comes to larger projects like this could be

Are you talking about the programming language or the actual hardware? The hardware does play a role. You need to take a hard look at the hosting company you use and not only the hardware they are building the site on, but also the bandwidth technology they have coming in and out of their data center.
