Can anyone recommend a top-notch, FAST WordPress web host (scalable from shared to ded) ?

I'm more interested in a host with genuine technical wherewithall and xlnt support than low price. Not interested in hostgator and similar...

I'd like to test launch some sites from a shared hosting acct...then be ready to scale up to (maybe a VPS and then) dedicated (preferably managed).

I'm on the west coast USA and prefer a host with their own datacenter.

      that's reassuring.. i was under the impression that if my sites got busy id need to move them... are you saying hostgator are good to grow busy sites with?

        Hostgator is one of the slowest hosting services. Only suitable for very low traffic sites. That's why I specifically excluded them in my original post in this thread. Still looking for snappy hosting services, if anyone has any other suggestions. Thanks.

          there still seem to be experienced warriors reccomending them
          i was always under the impression that their cheap services were slow and limited
