How to find PHP programmer for Project

Hey Ya'll,

What is the best way to find a PHP programmer for a fairly sizable project? I can't seem to have any luck with ODesk and the like.

There's a lot of outsourcing companies who are offering web development. You just need to o find the reputable on, ask for samples and client references so you can decide. I would suggest to post your job ads to our Marketplace to get some response.

Hiring an outsourcing firm is always the best option.

It depends on how much you're willing to pay, among other things. Talent is hard to find, and most of the best people are already working on something. Also, if you've never done a project before, more experienced developers are not going to want to work with you, so you're better off going with a company. What is your experience with doing projects like?

There is stackoverflow.com that give you a way to contact PHP developers. Make sure you go to the PHP specific website (the basic stackoverflow site is for C++ warriors). That seems to be a good place to find people with talent (check out their points!)

Otherwise, as wayfarer was saying, finding a company is probably your best choice because that way you can get a contract so as to have some recourse.

I have quite a bit of experience as we own one of the larger software companies in the real estate niche. We have this project underway and our programmer is sick, so we are needing to bring someone/company on board to join our team and bring it to completion

For sure it's possible to find good programmers on scriptlance and similar sites. If you can't find one there, perhaps your project description is not clear enough or someting is wrong with your pricing or the way you are communicating with candidates / bidders.

For example, on scriptlance try to avoid bidders with very low and very high number of reviews and those who bid or comment with meaningless automated messages. It doesn't matter is the programmer certified or not.
Talk only to those who comment before bidding, asking good questions or showing in some way that they really read your project description, understand it, or at least trying to, and ask questions to understand it better - this is usually the case with most projects, project descriptions are almost never so good and complete that they require no further explanation.

Have you tried looking on Linkedin.com? I know that a lot of people just use it for job searching and the like, but I have found a couple of good clients that way, due them posting requests for help regarding Drupal.

As for ODesk, I used to be a developer on there for a while, and the competition is almost impossible due to all of the offshore development that charges for less than a dollar per hour. I recommend that you put up a flat contract offer, somewhere between 1500 and 3000, and only take applicants in the USA. Give them a simple php test, and have them write you an explanation of why they coded it as such (so you can test their ability to write english) and go from there.

Also, if you are familiar with mIRC, you can idle in some php channels on Freenode, and ask some developers who show promise. Not sure what their rates are, but if they're willing to help others, they are generally good people to work with.

And why exactly non-US programmers should be rejected???

This is a myth. I earn $70 per hour on oDesk, and turn away projects all the time at that rate. It takes time to work up to this level though. I could probably charge more if I wanted to. It's my full-time job.

Absolutely avoid sites like craigslist for this. My advice to you would be to look for ads others have placed for PHP programmers so you can see what kind of requirements/experience are typically specified.
