Trying to understand backing up a website through cpanel... I have followed directions on cpanel backup wizard and have a .tar file for a website.

Question 1 - Does this mean ALL the website files and pages are within this .tar file or do I need to backup MSQ databases in addition? If so, how do I backup databases?

Question 2 - Should there be a problem and I need to restore a website, how do I apply the .tar file in a cpanel to get my website back online? I am thinking I need to keep the .tar file and database files on a disc or jump file backup off the main computer for safe keeping??

Thanks for any help from any warriors.

    1. I personally download the files and databases separately. It's likely I'm just a bit paranoid though. I backup databases using the export utility in phpmyadmin via cpanel.

    2. No clue if there's a semi-automated way to restore a website, sorry. I keep my files on my PC, as well as an external, just in case.

    via cpanel?

IF you do "complete backup" =>
    1. yes
    2. if you using hostgator like me, just tell the CS to restore using that file, it is FREE

    tips:
for secondary backup, do "home backup" and "db backup", save it on your own computer / harddisk, you can easily restore from cpanel menu

If you do a "full backup" in cpanel, then it is a full backup. All files, emails and databases for your main domain as well as addon domains.

To restore a "full backup" you need WHM Super User access, which most hosting and reseller accounts do not come with - as a result you will probably need your web host to restore this "full backup".

Also, this "full backup" can be used if you want to switch to a new cPanel hosting provider.

    Thanks,
